  • Milinkovic-Savic will remain in Rome.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is set to sign a new contract at Lazio, a decision that will no doubt be a disappointment for several leading European clubs who were targeting the midfielder.

The Serb’s current deal already runs until 2022, but Lazio sporting director Igli Tare says an extension has already been agreed.

“It’s just a matter of days now,” Tare told Sky Sports Italia, referring to both Milinkovic-Savic and striker Ciro Immobile, who was the top scorer in Serie A last season.

“All will be signed at the start of next week. The agreements have been in place for some time now.”

Milinkovic-Savic, who joined from Belgian side Genk in 2015, has made 126 appearances for Lazio, scoring 25 goals, and enjoyed a breakout season in 2017-18 that saw him become one of European football’s biggest stars and most sought-after players.

Lazio had set a €100million price tag for the 23-year-old this summer, warding off teams who had registered their interest. He had been linked with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham, among others.

However, it seems the midfielder will now stay put in Rome as he hopes to lead Lazio into the Champions League, after the club missed out on a top-four spot by a whisker last season.
