Roma’s mixed bag of a season has improved somewhat in the past month, mostly as a result of fan favourite Luciano Spalletti’s return as boss to replace Rudi Garcia. Spalletti has steadied the ship, and with four wins on the trot, the Giallorossi now sit two points behind third-placed Fiorentina and are most certainly in contention for a Champions League spot come May.

That run of form is on the line with a stern test against Real Madrid in the Champions League last-16. There is a renewed spirit in the Eternal City and Roma will want to ride the wave of optimism, aided by the return of their notoriously loud Curva Sud fans.

No Roma fan will ever forget the consecutive 2-1 wins against Real in the last-16 in 2007-2008, when Los Blancos were played off the pitch by a side managed by, you guessed it, Spalletti. Times have certainly changed since then, and both teams boast more talented squads today.

On their day, Roma can beat anyone at the Olimpico and in spite of their good form, Real Madrid’s instability following their own coaching upheaval will no doubt reveal itself sooner or later. Roma are finding their feet once again, and there is no greater occasion to show that they have turned a page this season.

    PREDICTION: Roma 2-1 Real Madrid

LIKELY ROMA XI: Szczesny; De Rossi, Rüdiger, Manolas, Florenzi; Pjanic, Naingollan, Keita; Perrotti, Salah; Dzeko

ROMA PLAYER TO WATCH: Mohamed Salah
The Egyptian has once again found his form – putting in a solid performance against Carpi, a game in which he played a part in all three goals. His pace is devastating, and his link-up play with newcomer Perrotti and temperamental striker Dzeko will be crucial.

REAL MADRID PLAYER TO FEAR: Cristiano Ronaldo
The Portuguese goal machine is showing no signs of letting up this season. His pace and skill are more than capable of tearing through our nervy defence, which has already felt the wrath of his Barcelona rivals Messi, Neymar and Suarez this season.

Unlike previous games between Roma and Real Madrid, in which Los Blancos have usually been the favourites, things are looking a bit more balanced ahead of this one.

Real are unbeaten in their past six games under Zinedine Zidane, who seems to have lifted the team’s confidence since his appointment. The number of goals scored by Karim Benzema in the last 45 days and the 400 minutes played by Isco (against 12 minutes during Rafa Benitez time) are positive signs that things are moving in the right direction.

It took just nine days for Roma president Jim Pallotta to follow in the footsteps of Bernabeu counterpart Florentino Perez and show Rudi Garcia the Stadio Olimpico exit door soon after Benitez in Madrid. And as Yazan notes above, Spalletti has returned for a second spell at the club and reinvigorated his Roman conquerors.

The new boss appears to have turned things round for the Giallorossi, and those four consecutive wins should serve as a warning to Madrid. As should Spalletti guiding Roma to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2008 when they eliminated Madrid at this stage. Here’s hoping Los Blancos will be too strong this time around and that history doesn’t repeat itself.

    PREDICTION: Roma 1-2 Real Madrid

LIKELY REAL MADRID XI: Navas; Carvajal, Varane, S. Ramos, Danielo; Kroos, Modric, Kovacic; James, Ronaldo; Benzema.

REAL MADRID PLAYER TO WATCH: Luka Modric
The Croatian has been outstanding recently. He is the passing metronome at the heart of this Real Madrid team, with his intelligent passing will be key to opening up Roma’s defence.

ROMA PLAYER TO FEAR: Mohamed Salah
The Egyptian’s direct running will be tough for Real’s full-backs to handle. Salah’s unpredictability is perhaps his biggest asset.

WHERE TO WATCH: Real Madrid Café, JBR – obviously!
