  • Roberto Firmino celebrates against Porto

The Premier League’s two most entertaining sides do battle on Wednesday night, as Manchester City travel to Liverpool in the last-eight of the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola’s side knocked out Basel to reach the quarter-finals, while Jurgen Klopp’s men put Porto to the sword to progress, setting up the first meeting between two English clubs since the 2010/11 season, when Manchester United knocked out Chelsea.

Here, we take a look at some of the key match facts and statistics for both sides, as they prepare to do battle for a place in the last four of the competition.

    LIVERPOOL

    – Liverpool will be hoping history can repeat itself in the quarter-finals. Their last semi-final appearance came in 2008, when they defeat Premier League rivals Arsenal to reach the last four. After a 1-1 draw in London, Liverpool won 4-2 at Anfield to progress.

    – Liverpool have not lost a European knockout match at Anfield since they were beaten 3-1 by Chelsea in the 2008/09 quarter-finals. Since then, the Reds have won 15 and drawn three.

    – Klopp’s side have scored 28 Champions League goals this season, one shy of their club record in one campaign, set in 2007/08 (29).

    – Roberto Firmino could become the first player to score eight Champions League goals for the Reds in one season, breaking the record set by club legend Steven Gerrard in 2008/09.

    – James Milner has provided six assists in this season’s Champions League. In the last 10 seasons, only Neymar (8 in 2016/17), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (7 in 2012/13) and Xavi (2008/09) have provided more assists in a single campaign.

    – Klopp is the only manager that has beaten Guardiola at least five times in all competitions. Jose Mourinho follows with four wins.

    MANCHESTER CITY

    – Guardiola could become the fourth manager to reach the Champions League semi-finals with three different teams (Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City) after Mourinho (4 teams), Carlo Ancelotti (3) and Louis van Gaal (3).

    – Manchester City have scored at least once in each of their last 13 Champions League matches – a club record. The last English sides to score in more consecutive matches were Chelsea (18, April 2011-November 2012) and Manchester United (16, March 2011-November 2012).

    – Only two of Manchester City’s previous seven Champions League knockout away matches have ended in victory – the 4-0 win against FC Basel in the last-16 this season and a 3-1 victory versus Dynamo Kyiv in February 2016.

    – Guardiola has won each of his previous seven Champions League quarter-final ties – four with Barcelona and three with Bayern. He can reach the Champions Cup/Champions League semi-finals for a record-equalling eighth time, set by Mourinho.

    – City will be hoping to reach the semi-finals of a European tournament for the fourth time, after the 1969/70 and 1970/71 Cup Winners’ Cup and the 2015/16 Champions League.

    – In the last three Champions League campaigns, only Cristiano Ronaldo (10, excluding extra time) has netted more goals in the final 15 minutes of regular time than City’s Raheem Sterling (5).
