  • Bayern Munich and Real Madrid contest the opening leg of their Champions League semi-final in Germany on Wednesday night.

In a clash of two of European football’s biggest heavyweights, there is of course plenty at stake as the Bundesliga side target a first crown since 2013 while Los Blancos chase an historic third consecutive triumph.

Here, we look at some of the key match facts and statistics ahead of the 25th European meeting between the two institutions.

    BAYERN MUNICH

    – The Bundesliga giants are set to contest their 11th Champions League semi-final, moving them level with Barcelona in terms of appearances. Only Real Madrid (13, including 2017-18) have reached this stage of the competition more often.

    – In Bayern’s 10 previous semi-finals, they have progressed to the final five times and were eliminated five times. They went on to win two of their five CL finals (2000/01 and 2012/13).

    – Bayern’s 5-0 aggregate defeat against Real Madrid in the 2013/14 semi-final was the last time they failed to score in consecutive Champions League matches. They lost 1-0 away and 4-0 at home.

    – Bayern last progressed from a Champions League semi-final in 2012/13, when Jupp Heynckes was manager. They beat Barcelona 7-0 on aggregate before winning 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley Stadium.

    – 72-year-old Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes, who turns 73 on May 9, will become the oldest coach to have managed in the semi-finals when he takes to the dugout in the opener this week.

    REAL MADRID

    – Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 15 Champions League goals this season. The record for most goals by a player in a European competition in a single season is 18 by Radamel Falcao for Porto in 2010/11. He netted once in Europa League qualifying and then 17 in the main competition.

    – Ronaldo has scored nine Champions League goals against Bayern and the Champions League record for most goals by a player against a single opponent is held by by the Portuguese – 10 against Juventus.

    – Real Madrid have won a total of 305 matches in European Cup and Champions League competitions combined, leaving them one victory shy of equalling arch-rivals Barcelona’s all-time record of 306.

    – In the entire history of European football’s biggest prize, Real Madrid, inclusive of Wednesday night’s clash, have reached the semi-stage a record 29 times. Bayern Munich are next on that list and will make their 19th last four appearance under the lights at the Allianz Arena.

    – Remarkably, Real Madrid have won nine Champions League matches against the Bundesliga giants, a competition record for the most victories against a single opponent. This is followed by Bayern’s eight wins against Real and Barcelona’s eight successes over Celtic.
