  • Real Madrid kicked off their latest Champions League defence with a comfortable 3-0 win against last term’s semi-finalists Roma.

Isco’s perfect free-kick just before the break put the hosts ahead after a dominant opening in which the Spain playmaker, international colleague Dani Carvajal and Wales forward Gareth Bale all spurned other presentable chances.

Bale made amends before the hour mark as he charged onto Croatia superstar Luka Modric’s divine pass and found the bottom corner. Substitute Mariano – wearing departed Portugal icon Cristiano Ronaldo’s No7 shirt – then powered in from the edge of the penalty box in injury-time to notch a stunning first goal since being bought back from Lyon last month.

Roma barely threatened in this Group G-contest at Santiago Bernabeu. Czech Republic attacker Patrik Schick blazed their best chance over during a rare second-half counter-attack.

Here are the player ratings for visitors whose poor form from Serie A continued in Europe:

    ROMA (4-3-3)

Robin Olsen – 8: The only Roma player who left the pitch with reputation enhanced. Began by diving at Isco’s feet within the first 10 minutes. Also diverted a Sergio Ramos header and saved the best for last when he kept out replacement Marco Asensio’s insouciant no-look shot. Sweden international continues to impress as replacement for Brazil No1 Alisson.

Andrea Florenzi – 7: A tough night for the club stalwart who was up against the rotating Isco and Bale. But his seven tackles showcased fighting spirit.

Kostas Manolas – 6: Roma’s high defensive line and lack of pressing intensity did him no favours. Tried to keep the home hordes away.

Federico Fazio – 4: Ex-Sevilla defender lumbered through against Madrid’s nimble attackers.

Aleksandar Kolarov – 5: Had one trademark shot in second half. Just like his team, poor domestic form was replicated in Europe.

Steven Nzonzi – 5: Former Sevilla man’s return to Spanish soil did not go well. Had a single interception and clearance to show, before being hooked.

Daniele De Rossi – 7: Roma stalwart tried his dogged best to keep up with his opponents. Age is catching up with him, however.

Nicolo Zaniolo – 5: Strange decision to start ahead of Italy colleagues Bryan Cristante and Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Cengiz Under – 5: Blew his big moment when he wildly lashed at a bouncing ball caused by Spain right-back Dani Carvajal’s error.

Edin Dzeko – 5: Bosnia centre forward was completely starved of service and had only 29 touches.

Stephan El Shaarawy – 5: Replicated Under’s limp show on the opposite flank.

    SUBSTITUTES

Lorenzo Pellegrini – 5: A passable performance from the Azzurri star.

Diego Perotti – 5: Another ex-Sevilla man did very little.

Patrik Schick – 5: Ballooned Roma’s best chance.
