  • The Netherlands coasted to a comprehensive win over reigning World Cup champions Spain on Friday night, to the delight of the Dutch contingent living in the UAE.

Hundreds of Oranje fans flocked to Emirates Golf Club to watch their side make a remarkable statement in their opening fixture as Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie inspired their side to a resounding victory over the team that beat them to World Cup glory four years ago.

"It was a good game," Dutch fan Jessica Leach put modestly next to her Spanish supporting companion. "Robin van Persie was great and they were positive and carried that energy throughout the match.

"I thought it would be tighter because the last time they were in the finals it was close."

Downtrodden and in debt of dinner, Spain supporter Jack Hardy put on a brave face next to Jessica.

"(Spain) played it too safe, especially towards the end. They should've been a bit bolder and tried to get back into the game but they just got smashed in the end," said Jack.

A typically rowdy atmosphere was made yet more vociferous due to the result and the overwhelming support from Netherlands fans who were obviously enjoying gaining revenge for their 1-0 defeat in the 2010 final in South Africa.

While visibly delighted with his country's win, Edwin Offenheim refused to get carried away with the result but was nonetheless delighted with his national side's display.

"It was unbelieveable what happened tonight, it was incredible. I never imagined 5-1 would be possible. It was real revenge for four years ago."

When asked if Holland could win it this year, Edwin's answer was an emphatic; "No."

"I'm very happy but I am still realistic," the Dutchman added.
