  • Mohamed El-Shenawy nearly earned a clean sheet.

Egypt played without Mohamed Salah on Friday as the winger’s expected return never took place in their World Cup opener.

In his absence, the team put in a performance of great heart, but lost to Uruguay 1-0.

    Here’s how the players fared.

    STARTING XI

Mohamed El-Shenawy 9 – The Egypt goalkeeper pulled off some stunning saves. On another day, Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani would have had a hat-trick.

Ahmed Fathy 8 – Captain on the day, Fathy was immense at the back for Egypt. A warrior-like performance from the right-back.

Ali Gabr 7 – Dealt with Egypt’s aerial threat well, but will wonder if he could have done more for Uruguay’s goal.

Ahmed Hegazy 8 – An absolute rock in defence for the Pharaohs. Repelled just about every threat the opposition posed, until the end, when he was beaten for Uruguay’s late goal.

Mohamed Abdel-Shafy 6 – A willing runner and defender throughout. Was part of an impressive Egypt rearguard.

Mohamed Elneny 7 – A commanding presence in midfield. Popped up everywhere in attack and defence, although he’ll rue being beaten for Uruguay’s goal.

Tarek Hamed 8 – Egypt’s best player in the first half, with his game cut short by injury. Outshone senior colleague Elneny – no small feat.

Amr Warda 7 – Showed why he was named player of the year in Greece’s Super League, with flashes of skill and plenty of energy.

Abdallah El-Said 6 – Escaped a yellow card early in the match for an embarrassing dive. Otherwise, showcased great energy.

Trezeguet 6 – Ran up and down the flank and showed good ability on the ball, but should have done better in the final third.

Marwan Mohsen 6 – Showed great effort and desire, but couldn’t provide enough of a goal threat to worry the Uruguay defence.

    SUBSTITUTES

Sam Morsy 7 – The Wigan Athletic man filled in admirably after Hamed went off injured.

Kahraba 6 – Was electric on the ball, but his end product was lacking.

Ramadan Sobhi N/A – Was a surprise when he came on instead of Salah. Barely had any time to impact the game.
