Sweden’s Jimmy Durmaz was the unfortunate victim of racist abuse after committing the foul that led to Toni Kroos‘ game-winning goal in the 2-1 loss to Germany in the World Cup.
Before Sweden’s training session on Sunday, the midfielder addressed the abuse by standing in front of his team-mates and delivering a statement.
“I am a footballer at the highest level. To be criticised is something we have to live with, it’s part of our job and we accept that every day of the week. But to be called ‘bloody darkie’, ‘suicide killer’ and for my family, my children, to receive death threats, that’s unacceptable,” Durmaz said.
