  • Hoping for the best: Toto Wolff will be celebrating a Mercedes world champion in Abu Dhabi.

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff is to call for the abolition of the double-points regulation ahead of next season.

The new rule has been widely condemned by fans and those inside F1 alike since its introduction at the start of the year.

It was designed to ensure a title race would more than likely go to the wire and be concluded at the final race of the campaign.

That has proved irrelevant this season as Wolff’s drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are separated by 17 points heading into the closing grand prix of this season in Abu Dhabi on November 23.

Even with 25 points for a win, Rosberg would still be heading into the final race with a title shot. With the final meeting of the World Motor Sport Council – the body that confirms new rules for the following year – due to take place in December, Wolff believes they should scrap double points.

Asked if it is his intention to push for that, he replied: “Yes. Nobody likes double points. I don’t think Bernie (Ecclestone) likes it. We are going to discuss that next time around, so it’s probably something we should get rid of next season.”

It was F1 supremo Ecclestone who brought double points into being, although his initial hope was for the scoring system to run over the final three grands prix of the season. Whatever the arguments, Wolff is simply hoping to avoid controversy in Abu Dhabi and that either Hamilton or Rosberg wins the title cleanly on the track.

“You could say the rules are the rules, and we know what they are,” added Wolff. “If you lose because you haven’t got enough points, it goes in the history books you either won it or lost it (on double points).

“But then if you imagine a scenario where the championship is turned by a DNF for example, a technical issue, that would obviously put a big shadow over the championship.

“So I very much hope for a straight (fight) between the two of them at the last race, and they will give it their all.”

Although Rosberg only has half the number of Hamilton’s victories this year – five to the Briton’s 10 – Wolff still feels he will be deserving of the title if he were to win it in two weeks’ time.

“Whoever has the most points will be the worthy champion,” said Wolff.

“You have to be pragmatic. Even though, if it comes down to that situation, we might have a different feeling about it.

“It is what it is. Whoever wins the championship is going to have his name in the record books, and that’s it.”

Hamilton knows a top-two finish will guarantee him his second title, but it is the unknown and unpredictability of F1 that means he cannot rest.

“There is zero comfort going into the last race,” said Hamilton. “There are 50 points to gain, which has never happened in Formula One before, and it just so happens to be this season. “In the last race you never know what is going to happen, so I’m going into it to win.”
