  • Head down to Yas Waterworld this Saturday afternoon to witness some fun and frolic – in a mildly competitive environment – as a dozen teams from colleges, clubs and universities around the country do battle in a challenge dubbed as “Survival of the Fittest”.

That’s right. Twelve four-member teams, as well as entrants from radio competitions and Facebook, will go head-to-head in a series of challenges that will keep spectators entertained all afternoon.

And it’s not all about athletic ability either. The different phases of competition will test their cognitive skills and consumption abilities, as well as their physical prowess. The teams will take part in a series of specially-designed bouts of jousting, races, competitive eating, paddling, puzzles and more – all with the aim of beating their closest rivals and surviving to the next round.

It’s all about being fitter, both mentally and physically, than the others. The elimination challenges range from having to throw more than 2,000 pearls into a bucket in the Amwaj Pearl Rescue to paddling a two-man tube across a set route.

There will also be a joust-off atop paddle boards and a pizza-eating and giant slushie-slurping competition that is guaranteed to separate the men from the boys. The final task will involve a swim to retrieve a giant puzzle with the team that’s able to put all the pieces together walking away with the title.

It sounds like a very exciting competition to be part of – something you might never forget – and it’s no wonder that there is such a fantastic reaction from prospective teams. Unfortunately there are no more places available.

“We have got a remarkable response to the call out for this competition with many of the teams coming up with really fun names and costumes – it’s going to be a hugely entertaining spectacle,” says Mike Oswald, park manager, Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi.

“The participating teams have some great prizes in store and the whole nature of the challenge makes it fun not just for the people taking part but for everyone watching. It’s like having a reality TV show come to life with all the elements of anticipation, fun team rivalry, action-packed tasks and a big winner at the end,” added Oswald.

So get onto Facebook now and get your discount for the park on Saturday. It will only take a couple of minutes and after the competition you will have access to 43 different rides, slides and attractions, such as the world’s longest, fastest tornado waterslide, the region’s first looping waterslide and the world’s first interactive water and laser rollercoaster.

There will also be other spectacular feats to savour during the day, as Yas Waterworld are inviting guests to surf on Bubble’s Barrel – the largest FlowBarrel 10 Double sheet wave ride in the world.

Spectators can log on to the event’s Facebook page and vote for the team they like the best, enabling them to get a Dh40 entry discount into the park on the day. You can look up the various team names on the site and can go to the park on Saturday to cheer on your adopted team.
