  • Popular: Organiser expect many competitors in the tournaments’ 20 divisions.

The UAE’s most popular amateur tennis tournament once again hits the nation’s capital with the return of the Abu Dhabi Wilson Tennis Cup.

The fourth edition of the event will be held from March 4 to March 25 at Zayed Sports City and more than 300 entries are expected across 20 divisions.

This is the only tournament that allows competitors to play multiple divisions, as players will be divided by gender, age and skill in the Open and Cup categories to ensure even play.

Former pro Peter Wessels, who reached an ATP ranking of 72 during his career, will be one of the many athletes to showcase their talent as he’ll be back to defend his title in the ultra-competitive Men’s Open.

Hurry up: Entry fees for the tournament range from Dh 80 to 150.

“Having so many players, parents and supporters around at the beautiful location of Zayed Sports City really makes you feel part of a club, something that is quite unique in the UAE,” Wessels said.

“I believe it’s very important for the development of tennis players to have these tournaments, so players can match up and lift each other to a higher level. It is also an opportunity for people who are usually not involved in tennis to see and experience how much fun it can be.”

The tournament has seen significant growth since its inaugural launch in 2013, when 83 players entered, up to last year which saw 339 competitors. Organisers Zayed Sports City expect full capacity in this edition.

“The Abu Dhabi Wilson Tennis Cup has been a complete hit with the players and really encompasses the spirit of the sport,” said Barry Bremner, general manager of ZSC.

“It’s about inclusiveness, sportsmanship and personal growth. The response from tennis players around the country has been incredible and anyone who wants to participate should register early so as not to miss out.”

The Open category caters to current and former coaches, pros, and ATP and WTA players, while the Cup category is perfect for social and non-professionals. Juniors may compete in up to two divisions, with adults allowed to take part in a maximum of three events.

Matches will take place on weekdays from 17:00 and on weekends from 09:00.

Entries are now open, with registrations accepted at the International Tennis Centre or by contacting Laith Al Ani at [email protected] or 050 464 0824.

Registration closes on Saturday, February 20 for junior categories and on Saturday, February 27 for adult categories. Fees range from Dh 80 to 150 per entry.

If you think you have what it takes to hang with the best players in the region, show your stuff on the courts at the Abu Dhabi Wilson Tennis Cup.
