  • Fun for all: Volleyball.

Duplays new beach volleyball leagues return later this month and if you want to see why it’s rated so highly, then go ahead and sign up as registration is still open.

Their Wild Sets Season, held every Monday and Wednesday and Spike It Like It’s Hot, played every Tuesday from May 16, will provide thrilling encounters over eight weeks of action at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi in Dubai.

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced level player, there’s something for everyone. The Monday and Wednesday leagues are social, while the Tuesday one is competitive.

As the UAE’s biggest sport and social club with over 5,000 members, Duplays know quite a lot about organising tournaments. Their portfolio includes football, netball and badminton, and beach volleyball has proven to be a huge success, given it is one of the more popular sports played in the UAE, thanks to the country’s wonderful coastline on the Arabian Gulf.

“We’ve been running our beach volleyball leagues for several years and without a doubt it’s one of our most popular leagues,” said Gareth Curtis, operations manager at Duplays.

“That is quite amazing because there are close to 400 people playing volleyball on weeknights every week and that is a remarkable number.

“We realise there are players who may have never played the sport, so that’s why we have organised three leagues with different abilities.

“Mondays and Wednesdays is open to people of all abilities and is very social. It focuses more on fun. The Tuesdays competition, the standard of play will be very high and there are players who’ve played this before.”

Each team member must be 21 years and over, and there must be at least one female player on court. Matches will be played between 19:00 and 23:00 every week and entry costs Dh3,500 per team or Dh500 per person.

With a few days to go until it gets underway, Curtis insists there are plenty of positives by signing up for the league.

“Sport is a huge thing for us,” he said. “Not only does it help people to stay fit but it’s a great way to learn new sports like beach volleyball which has proven to be very popular. The matches will be very exciting and the players will have a lot of fun.

“The matches are played outdoors in a fantastic venue and the atmosphere will be great because there will be music playing and the players stay behind to interact with others after the games. It’s a great way to meet new people and be part of our leagues that will only go from strength to strength.”
