  • Stepping out: More and more ladies are taking to the game in the UAE.

A new indoor tournament will begin in Dubai later this month, giving a chance to the ladies to showcase their skills.

The Cycle Hub Women’s Cricket League will see teams battle for glory at the Go Stadia facility in Dubai Investment Park on June 16 and 17.

Entry numbers have been encouraging but you can still be part of the two-day competition with registration closing on Friday.

Women’s cricket in the UAE is booming with many new players taking to the game across the country. While the men’s national team have had great success in the past with World Cup, World Twenty20 and Asia Cup qualifications, their women counterparts have also enjoyed plenty of success in the region, retaining their Gulf Cup title last December following victory over hosts Qatar in Doha.

Pathway to success: Events like the Cycle Hub Women’s Cricket League could be the stepping stone.

Pathway to success: Events could be a stepping stone.

On the domestic stage, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) held their inaugural women’s T20 tournament, which proved to be a big hit. And as part of its drive in ensuring the women’s game stays on top, Humera Khan, organiser of the tournament, insists this will be an opportunity for players to remain active during Ramadan.

“Through this Women’s Cricket League, the Cycle Hub wants to promote women’s health and wellbeing. We believe that participation in this competition will promote not only healthy living but also have a variety of socioeconomic benefits,” she said.

The 12-over matches will be played between 19:30 and 00:30 with teams of no more than six players. With entry also open to corporates, Khan insists there are plenty of positives by taking part.

“By competing as a team, it will help them to strengthen team bonding and as a result, it can have a lot of positive impacts on the businesses,” she said. “Indoor cricket is an exciting form as it combines fun, fitness and competition and gives an opportunity for people of all abilities to play.

“It can be taken easily as a hobby or a fitness programme for those who’ve not even played the game. The most important thing is that participation is key.

“The best thing about indoor cricket is that there are no seasons and this will allow the women to play exciting matches over two days that will keep them active at this time of the year when the weather is now hot.”

    Registration closes on Friday.
