  • On your marks: The Labour Run takes place in Dubai on October 21.

With the new season now under way, here’s your chance to hit the road and play your part in the Labour Run next month.

More than 500 runners are expected to feature in the second edition on Friday, October 21, at Muhaisnah 2, Sonapur in Dubai and you can still join them with registration still open.

Organised by Teams Sports UAE, the aim is to help the labourers get active and promote a healthy lifestyle for all.

“Sonapur is a labour accommodation area and the purpose of organising the race there is to bring this healthy opportunity to their door step,” said event director Meher Un Nissa. “This way a lot of people can join this. Our labourers are our main asset and heroes, and this will give them the rare chance of running for a event which is specifically organised for them.”

The inaugural edition in 2015 proved to be a huge success and Un Nissa has urged the UAE running community to come together and show their support.

“The labourers will not be charged to enter but we want as many runners of all abilities to run,” she said. “Our motto is ‘Run so they can run’. The participation of the runners will give the labourers more motivation to succeed as well as enhancing their confidence.”

With the event supported by Majid Al Futtaim Charity Foundation, Un Nissa, insists it’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss.

“The one we held last year was really popular and attracted hundreds of runners,” she said. “It was a great bench mark for it being successful. As well as the labourers, we had social and professional runners and we got positive feedback from everyone including local authorities.

“This is a purely noble cause and we wish our social and professional runners to take part in this event. Participation is key as it will help the labourers become active through running. Times do not matter, it’s your participation that counts.”
