Some of the world’s most promising figure skaters will be in Abu Dhabi this weekend and besides witnessing the action, there’s plenty of off-rink entertainment lined up for spectators.
The FBMA Trophy for figure skating returns for another edition from tomorrow to Saturday at Zayed Sports City and will see more than 90 competitors from 23 countries, including the UAE, Australia and Canada, take to the rink for top honours.
In addition to the ice skating action, there will also be a winter festival at the ice rink garden, which will include bouncy castles and fun activities to keep everyone entertained. Since launching in 2015, the competition has gone from strength to strength and this year’s is set to be no different.
“The success of the FBMA Trophy is attributed to the fact that we have organised smooth and professional figure skating events for the last two years,” said Roquiya Cochran, chairperson of the organising committee and UAE Ice Sports Federation figure skating manager.
“This year our number of participating countries has increased by 50 per cent and also our junior and senior level skater numbers have increased by over 200 per cent.”
UAE star and Olympic hopeful Zahra Lari will be among the Emiratis in action, hoping to fly the national flag high. And with free admission, Cochran insists it’s a competition not to be missed.
“Since winter sports are so unique in the Middle East, the ability to see the live action of a winter sport competition in Abu Dhabi, is what makes the FBMA Trophy a must-see event,” she said.
“To have world class competitors, as well as six UAE nationals compete here in Abu Dhabi is amazing. The levels range from basic novice up to seniors and to see double, triple and even quad jumps is a sight not to miss. This year we will also have outdoor activities for the spectators to enjoy.
“We will even have an outdoor rink for anyone who wants to try their own skating skills or get the feel of what the competitors are doing on the ice. It’s a very special time of the year and we would love for everyone to come and join this free FBMA Trophy international figure skating competition.”
She added: “We want to increase public awareness for this beautiful and unique winter sport and see it continue to grow, thrive and be a success. Without the continued support of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak and Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza, such events would not be possible. Their continued and unfaltering support for women in sport is the driving force of these events.”

If you’re someone who’s always searching for the next fitness trend or creative ways to work up a sweat, look no further than AquaFIT for your next endeavour.
Hailed as the new workout phenomenon, the UAE’s first dedicated spa biking fitness centre has hit Dubai to bring an alternative way to put the pedal to the metal. Basically, AquaFIT allows for riding a stationary bike under water.
It may not sound all that revolutionary, but the benefits of the workout are hard to ignore. With 16 powerful water jets, AquaFIT combines biking and hydro-massage to deliver a session that can reduce cellulite, burn body fat, aid micro-peeling, reshape the lower body and abdominals, improve circulation, rehabilitate healing muscles and joints, and improve cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility.
The water acts as a form of builtin resistance, which in turn challenges your muscles to exert even more energy than usual, upping the intensity of the workout. AquaFIT is also the only individual spa bike which fills 720 litres of water, allowing the user to feel more submerged and providing a fuller range of motion to maximise the resistance.
But as you’re under water, the effects of gravity are lessened, which puts much less stress on your knees and joints than would normally be the case. The low impact is especially important because that means anyone can do the exercise, whether you’re a regular gym-goer in your mid 20s or a sedentary person in your 50s.
Each 30-minute session can burn an average of 500 calories, which is almost double what can be achieved through a standard cycling workout. Sessions are relatively quick and hassle-free as well, with the bikes having a water-filling and drainage system that wastes little time.
For those that want to visit the spa, located in Sunset Mall, Jumeirah, AquaFIT is offering a 40 per cent discount on all packages for the month of January. It’s the perfect way to get a head-start on your New Year resolutions.
Try an individual aqua biking experience for yourself and see what all the buzz is about at the newly-opened AquaFIT.

With 2017 now upon us, there’s no better way to begin the new year on an active note with the 2XU Triathlon
Championship returning for their second race of the season.
This Friday, hundreds will flock to Mamzar for the popular multi-sport discipline from 07:00 and you can still join them ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Whether you’re an experienced triathlete or someone who has never tried it before, there are various distances and age groups on offer.
Four categories are on the schedule with the Junior Super Sprint open for those under 13, who will swim 180m, cycle for 8km followed by a 1.25km run. Their Super Sprint distance, which consists of a 375m swim, 8km cycle and 2.5km run, is aimed for 13-18 year-old as well as adults who are new to the sport.
For those who want to test themselves, then the Sprint (750m swim, 24km cycle and 5km run) is there while the Olympic category will see athlete compete twice those distances. With triathlon booming in the UAE with many community events held throughout the year, it was no surprise to see more than 800 entries received for the opening race of the season, with a similar turn-out is expected this weekend.
“The second race of the 2XU Triathlon Championships is going to be an absolute thriller, especially with everyone in fine form ahead of Ironman 70.3 Dubai,” said 2XU marketing manager Samantha Cadwallader.
“It’s the perfect opportunity to practice your transitions and any last-minute race strategies, so we expect to see some stellar performances. Once again, we will be giving all athletes a technical training top valued at Dh180 which they can collect with their race pack from GO Sport in Mall of the Emirates.”
As part of their vision in attracting more people, there is a discount for families of three while there are attractive prizes to be won.
“An added incentive is that anyone who finishes the race will stand a chance of winning an all expenses paid trip to the Thanyapura Health and Sport Resort in Phuket, Thailand” said Beryl Kyte, marketing manager for Al Mana Fashion Group – Sports Division.
“We at GO Sport are delighted with the participation of athletes in the triathlon series and what is really promising is the number of juniors who have been entering these races and in doing so, many parents have got involved as well making it a real family affair.
“For that reason we have asked the organisers to offer all families of three or more a special discount on entry fees and in that way making it more viable for the whole family to come down and participate.”
