Barasti Beach at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina will host the 21st swim of the Super Sports Mina Mile Open Swim Series on Saturday, November 11.
This event, organised by Super Sports Events and sanctioned by the Dubai Sports Council, will offer an exciting line-up of swim races open to adults, juniors and swim teams from across the UAE.
Around 400 swimmers are expected to enter and several different race distances are on offer which include a 200m for those under 13, 400m, 800m as well as the one mile (1.6km) course.
The main event will be a one mile (1,600m) swim with four different male and female aged categories: 18 years and under, 19 to 39, 40 to 49 and 50 and over.
A 200m swim for those aged 12 and younger will also take place and be divided in to two categories, under nine and nine to 12.
For those who feel the mile swim is just out of reach, a two category male and female 400m and 800m swim is also on offer for ages 18 and under and 19 and over.
Relay races for junior and senior schools, swim clubs, companies, individual teams and families will comprise of three swimmers in a team with each team member having to swim 100m.
“Now in its 21st edition, the Mina Mile is the longest running open water swim series in the UAE and one of the most favourite swims on everyone’s event calendar,” said race director Warren van der Merwe from Super Sports Events.
“This unique race has evolved in to a real team and family affair with more and more families and teams entering. So with this in mind we are offering families and teams discounted rates so there is no excuse to get everyone in the water.
“The junior races are always popular and many of the older juniors have walked away with all the top honors in most of the races on offer in the past so it will be interesting to see if they do the same in the next race.”
Chris de Nil – Mina Seyahi complex recreation director – will be on hand and competing with his family to make sure proceedings run smoothly, and said that the water conditions should be calm and flat and that his team of lifeguards are ready to ensure that the expected swimmers will all have a safe and enjoyable morning down on Barasti Beach.
Entry fees are Dh175 per adult and Dh125 per junior aged 18 and under, and will allow all swimmers to swim in as many events as they wish to on the day.
With four different distances on offer and 25 male and female age group categories, all participants receive a medal, electronic chip timer, certificate and swim cap.
First, second and third placed swimmers in all age group categories will receive winners’ medals and overall race distance winners get prizes from associated sponsors.
All event details and online entries can be found at www.supersportsuae.com. Entries close at midnight on Wednesday.

Take aim and hit your mark with Dart Players Middle East (DPME), the leading community for the sport in the region.
If you’re not already a darts aficionado, it may seem like an intimidating activity to get immersed in. But DPME is attempting to make darts accessible for those who want to take it up, or for those who want to play with fellow enthusiasts.
DPME have leagues and competitions running throughout the year, with their Winter League currently under way. You can still join, however, and show off your skills to earn bragging rights.
The Winter League, which is two weeks into the season, features two divisions, with five teams in Division A and six teams in Division B.
League games are played every Wednesday night from 20:00 to 23:00 at various venues across Dubai, depending on which team is the home side.
Whether you’re a social player or looking for serious competition, the Winer League is the perfect way to get involved with darts.
Construct a team of men or women – each team requires a minimum of four players and a maximum of 10 – to take part in the varied formats (501 and cricket).
Check out the scene for yourself and see how DPME continues to grow and gather more like-minded players.
“We started off as a darts team around a year ago now, with just a group of people who would be interested in playing,” said DPME club secretary Ross Hampton.
“There’s obviously a big expat base over and a lot of people come over from different countries who enjoy the social side of it and the competitive side as well. So we tried to put together a structure so everyone can do that.”
Head to www.dartplayersmiddleeast.com for all the latest updates on DPME, including upcoming competitions, results and more.

Act now to grab your chance of learning to play golf without having to part with a single dirham at Abu Dhabi City Golf Club (ADCGC) this week.
Starting from today and running daily right through until Saturday, October 28, you can take your first steps of getting into the swing of things as part of ADCGC’s vision in promoting the game to newcomers.
Open to all ages, you will learn different techniques and methods under the supervision of the club’s qualified PGA professionals.
The venue has regularly hosted free taster sessions to kids to much success and David Taylor, head teaching professional at ADCGC, says the club wants to replicate that again this week.
“The aim of the week is to showcase what we do at Abu Dhabi City Golf Academy and introduce as many new golfers to the game as possible,” he said.
“We aim to continue to be the leading academy in Abu Dhabi for developing golf, and providing an unparalleled experience and opportunity to play this great game.
“The lessons will be taken on our two-tiered driving range and will focus on the fundamentals of the swing. New golfers will learn the basic set-up, hold and swing movements, whilst golfers who have played before will be able to take advantage of our expert PGA qualified pros who will be on hand to get the best out of their game.
“We have had great success with a free golf week for juniors in the past so we thought we would extend this opportunity to learn golf in a fun and relaxed atmosphere to everyone in the UAE.
“We take great pride in being known as ‘The People’s Golf Club’ and we hope our friendly, positive and welcoming approach can help more and more people play the game. There is sometimes a stereotype in golf that golf clubs can be intimidating places, certainly not here at Abu Dhabi City Golf Club.”
The one-hour classes are available from 09:00 to 10:00 (today until Thursday) or 10:00 to 11:00 on Friday and Saturday, with all equipment provided. Limited places are available and Taylor says there is no reason to turn down the opportunity, especially with some fantastic prizes up for grabs.
“Very simply, this is a great opportunity to try golf here in Abu Dhabi and all for completely free,” he added. “
At Abu Dhabi City Golf Club we strive to provide an accessible, welcoming and fun learning environment for all golfers, their families and friends. We can’t wait to get started and see a week of smiles and happy golfers.”
