  • Making a splash: This will be the 21st edition of the Mina Mile to be held in the UAE.

Barasti Beach at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina will host the 21st swim of the Super Sports Mina Mile Open Swim Series on Saturday, November 11.

This event, organised by Super Sports Events and sanctioned by the Dubai Sports Council, will offer an exciting line-up of swim races open to adults, juniors and swim teams from across the UAE.

Around 400 swimmers are expected to enter and several different race distances are on offer which include a 200m for those under 13, 400m, 800m as well as the one mile (1.6km) course.

The main event will be a one mile (1,600m) swim with four different male and female aged categories: 18 years and under, 19 to 39, 40 to 49 and 50 and over.

A 200m swim for those aged 12 and younger will also take place and be divided in to two categories, under nine and nine to 12.

For those who feel the mile swim is just out of reach, a two category male and female 400m and 800m swim is also on offer for ages 18 and under and 19 and over.

Relay races for junior and senior schools, swim clubs, companies, individual teams and families will comprise of three swimmers in a team with each team member having to swim 100m.

“Now in its 21st edition, the Mina Mile is the longest running open water swim series in the UAE and one of the most favourite swims on everyone’s event calendar,” said race director Warren van der Merwe from Super Sports Events.

“This unique race has evolved in to a real team and family affair with more and more families and teams entering. So with this in mind we are offering families and teams discounted rates so there is no excuse to get everyone in the water.

“The junior races are always popular and many of the older juniors have walked away with all the top honors in most of the races on offer in the past so it will be interesting to see if they do the same in the next race.”

Water babies: There are plenty of distances and categories for swimmers of all ages to participate in.

Chris de Nil – Mina Seyahi complex recreation director – will be on hand and competing with his family to make sure proceedings run smoothly, and said that the water conditions should be calm and flat and that his team of lifeguards are ready to ensure that the expected swimmers will all have a safe and enjoyable morning down on Barasti Beach.

Entry fees are Dh175 per adult and Dh125 per junior aged 18 and under, and will allow all swimmers to swim in as many events as they wish to on the day.

With four different distances on offer and 25 male and female age group categories, all participants receive a medal, electronic chip timer, certificate and swim cap.

First, second and third placed swimmers in all age group categories will receive winners’ medals and overall race distance winners get prizes from associated sponsors.
