Cigna Park Run: Fun for all the family

With Ramadan upon us, May is the perfect time of year to get outdoors and active before the summer heat strikes. Whether you’re a total beginner or seasoned runner, the whole family is encouraged to take part in the Cigna Park Run, which will feature events of varying distances – 2.5km or 5km on Saturday, May 5.

Jon Norris from event organisers Race ME said, “We’re very excited and happy to announce one of the first Park Run concepts here in Dubai sponsored by Cigna health insurance. It’s a free timed fun run in a Dubai park that the whole family can participate in and the first of several planned runs this year and more to follow through 2019”.

A one-off registration fee of Dhs 100 gets you a souvenir technical t-shirt and a custom timing chip. Then you can participate as many times as you like through the year at a Cigna Park Run event – just let the Race ME know you’re coming.

Sponsoring the Dubai event is Cigna Corporation, a global health service company dedicated to helping people improve their health, well-being and sense of security. With a heritage of over 200 years, Cigna is committed to its promise of being together all the way in providing healthcare, clinical management and wellness programs to employers, individuals and governments around the world.

Operating for more than 15 years in the MENA region, the corporation serves the GCC markets and Lebanon through its locally regulated entities.

The company maintains a global sales capability in 30 countries and jurisdictions, employing over 40,000 people that service more than 95 million customer relationships throughout the world.

The Park Run concept has gone from strength-to-strength around the world and was only a matter of time before we saw them in Dubai. These events are designed for the whole family to participate and for all to be active and enjoy the sport. Whether you are walking the 2.5km or running the 5km for a personal best time, this is a very relaxed and friendly event to be a part of.

The Park Runs are an ideal place to enjoy your surrounding while engaging with a sport. Cigna insurance is no better partner to sponsor an event like this, promoting a healthier lifestyle for all.

There might still be a few weeks until the schools break up for the summer but budding footballers can still remain active with IFA Sport’s Ramadan Football Camp.

Running from May 20 to June 14 at Dubai Sports World (Dubai World Trade Centre), the camp is open for 4-to-14 year-olds, who will develop and learn new skills under the academy’s qualified coaching staff.

IFA Sport are no strangers to organising summer camps with their previous editions proving hugely popular and this year’s will be no different.

“The Ramadan camps are a great way to keep the kids busy in the quieter months. As we run at indoor venues the heat is also no problem,” said Jess Prelle, marketing manager at IFA Sport.

“We get around 80 kids per day at our camps which are split into age groups and each have a dedicated and highly qualified coach.”

She added: “We run a football curriculum which means that no day is the same and the kids don’t get bored.

“Each day focuses on a different aspect of football with themes such as ‘Stay On The Ball’, ‘Control Possession’, ‘Take Your Chance’ and ‘Win The Ball’. Players then have the chance to test their skills in structured mini-tournaments.  Players also undertake a series of Skills Challenges, receiving comprehensive performance reviews at the end of the week. In addition to all the drills, there’s always plenty of match time too.”

Sessions are held from 14:00 to 16:00 between Sundays to Thursdays, costing Dh50 per day.

Although there’s a few weeks to go until it begins, Prelle has urged parents to enroll their children now for what will be a fun-filled camp.

“With over a decade of experience in the region, IFA Sport is the largest grass roots independent sports academy in the UAE with a brand vision to help more kids get more out of sport,” she said.

“IFA Football Camps are designed to give players the opportunity to progressively develop their football skills in a fun and positive environment.  During the five-day camps, players will learn about all areas of the game under the tutelage of the vastly experienced UEFA qualified coaching team.

“In Ramadan our hours are 2-4pm which is a great option for the kids to join straight after school whilst parents might still be busy.”

Fun in the sun: Experience the UAE before the summer heat

If you’ve ever experienced the Dubai summer you know there are only a few weeks left before stepping outside becomes somewhat of a chore.

With that said, we teamed up with Decathlon to gather our camping gear and enjoy the UAE’s great outdoors before having to hibernate for the summer. Camping’s not much fun on your own of course, so we invited some of Dubai’s more popular outdoor social media influencers to join us at Al Aqah beach for a weekend of sporting activities.

Before heading out on our road trip, the day begins with us picking up supplies from Decathlon for our beachside adventure. Surfboards, kayaks, snorkelling gear and volleyball equipment is all loaded up as we’re aiming to make the most of the glorious winter weather, before having to retreat to the safety of air conditioning, away from the summer sun. As you’d expect with a car full of influencers – Ghida Arnaout (@monkyseemonkydo), Samia Kallidis (@skallidis), Luke Morris (@islandofluke), and Charbel Zakhour (@wheresmybackpack) – they have their GoPro’s and drones in hand, as we make the journey from Dubai to Fujairah.

“If I’m staying at the beach I always have my sleeping bag, and a headlamp when I go camping” says avid outdoorsman Charbel Zakhour. “Kayaking and racket beach ball are my favourite things to do when I go camping”.

Upon arrival, the group waste no time setting up the tent and sleeping bags before getting straight into the water sports. The setting couldn’t be better with the Indian Ocean flanking us on one side and the Hajar Mountains on the other. Well into their health and fitness our group of social media stars hike through the mountain range, up sand dunes, and around the winding wadis at the foothill of the mountains. As the sun sets, thoughts inevitably turned to food, which is prepared on a gas stove picked up from the Decathlon store earlier in the morning.

Morris said, “I can’t go camping without my paddle board, and volleyball. Paddle boarding is my favourite thing to do and my favourite camping spot in the UAE is Fujairah. There’s a great beach, mountains and a really chilled out vibe so it’s perfect”.

“I love all kinds of sports and if the beach is involved it’s perfect. Camping in Dubai is perfect because it’s secluded and you can see the stars at night”, added Samia Kallidis
