Book a football pitch at Abu Dhabi Sports Festival.

While Dubai Sports World rages on at World Trade Centre, the capital’s own version of a sporting oasis has gotten under way at Zayed Sports City.

Residents in the emirate can head down to Abu Dhabi Sports Festival, which runs until August 20 and features sports for all athletes and skill levels.

Whether you’re trying to keep fit in the cool confines of the tents located near the International Tennis Centre, or wanting to get in shape, the festival is the place to be this summer.

Whatever your preference, the festival has you covered with basketball, volleyball, football, badminton, mini-tennis and fitness on offer.

Every day, beginning at 10:00 and going until 16:30, Open Play sessions will be held, allowing children aged four to 16 the chance to take part in different activities and sports. Children under 16 must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.

While football is available all day long, volleyball, basketball and table tennis take place from 18:00 to 23:00, when adults can sink their teeth into the action on the court and pitch.

Before or after getting active, make sure to also fuel up with food and beverages from Costa and Simple Cafe.

There is no entrance fee to get into the festival, but the prices vary by activity.

Open Play sessions are Dh21 for children, while their parents or guardians can get in for free. Football pitch hire costs Dh300 per hour, whereas volleyball and basketball bookings cost Dh50 per hour, and table tennis is Dh25 per hour, up to four people.

There’s no need to book for Open Play sessions, but for football, volleyball, basketball and table tennis, booking in advance is recommended to ensure pitch or court availability. You can also book at the door as long as the pitch or court you want to play on is free.

You can book and pay online by visiting www.adsf2018.ae.

Joining hands: ADNOC and ADSC signed the deal last week

The ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon on December 7 might seem a long way off but now is the time to take advantage of a special early bird discount for the inaugural event.

The race will be held over a 26 mile course that will showcase the city of Abu Dhabi to a global audience. In recognition of the Year of Zayed, the race will bring together elite international athletes, seasoned amateur runners and thousands of people taking part in their first marathon. It will offer runners of all abilities the chance to participate in a range of events from 2.5km and 5km fun runs, to the 10km and full-distance marathon.

To mark the launch, organisers Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) have announced special entry prices from Friday until July 31.

For those who register until July, can pay Dh35 for the 2.5km course, Dh52.50 for the 5km, Dh105 for 10km and Dh245 for the marathon.

The event is the latest to hit the capital which already hosts the Formula One and Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.

Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Romaithi, chairman of General Authority for Sports, said the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon is the latest addition to the ever-growing list of international sporting events to arrive in Abu Dhabi.

“It may be the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi, but it will be second to none among established international marathons around the world,” he said. “We expect a world-class elite field and participation of thousands of runners at various levels.”

Aref Al Awani, general secretary of ADSC, added: “The ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon adds a new international sporting event to our calendar of events and will leave behind a legacy that the Abu Dhabi Sports Council is very keen to promote as part of our community sports programming.”

For Omar Suwaina Al Suwaidi, executive office director at ADNOC, the event fits in line with the company’s vision to promote a health lifestyle.

“ADNOC is excited to play a part in bringing such an iconic event, the marathon, to Abu Dhabi,” he said. “Our partnership with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council is built on a shared commitment to elevating the health and well-being of individuals and embodies ADNOC’s historical dedication to supporting the communities in which we operate.”

“Whether it’s through sporting and recreation, health and wellness, or youth and STEM education, ADNOC’s corporate social responsibility and purpose remains firm: To create a positive and lasting impact on UAE society,” he added.
