If challenging yourself physically is at the top of your New Year resolutions, then the M1 Run has you covered with its unique stairclimbing race.

– #360LIVE: Transfer Window – January 6 – rumours, updates and chat

The event takes place in Media One Hotel on Saturday, January 17 and is perfect for individuals, corporate teams, friends and families.

Unlike a typical race, the vertical run will commence at the ground level of Media One Hotel and run through the car park up to level 7. The one kilometre sprint will only be an appetizer of what’s to come as competitors will then move on to the next stage – a 700-stair climb from level 7 all the way to the finish line at level 42.

The top three men, top three women and top three teams will earn various prizes to the value of Dh90,000, while raffle draws will also offer prizes to the value of Dh10,000.

“Our Media One team is in serious training now the festive activities have finished,” said Felix Hartmann, director of food & beverage of Media One Hotel. “We have had some great training sessions and hope some of our hotel competitors enter so we have a real challenge on our hands.

“We are looking forward to seeing the individuals that have registered, as we know this will be a much more serious race and a challenge for personal bests. A few brave corporate companies have started to train and hopefully they will also challenge themselves against some of their rivals. But we are also happy for anyone to create a team to participate if they don’t think they can manage the feat alone.”

Following the race and award ceremony, a special deal will be available for LaidBack on 8 for lunch and drinks next to the pool with the resident DJ, as well as use of all facilities – pool, sauna and steam room – to recover from the demanding run.

Stairway to success: The race is perfect for corporate teams, friends and families.

The race for individuals starts at 10:00, while the race for the teams of four in a relay format begins at 11:30. The entry fee is Dh99 each for individuals and Dh399 per team.

Registration closes on Thursday, January 15, and competitors can sign-up online at www.premieronline.com.

Push the tempo: Registration for the Wadi Adventure Race closes on January 11.

The popular Wadi Adventure Race (W.A.R.) returns this month where athletes will be pushed to the limits in a gruelling obstacle course.

– ADCB Zayed Sports City 5 and 10km series begin second run

Taking place on Saturday, January 17, it is the second race of the 2014-15 season with hundreds descending on Wadi Adventure Park in Al Ain in the last edition in November.

Since its debut in 2012, the race has gone from strength to strength, and organisers are expecting another strong turnout this month for what will be the eighth edition overall. Competitors will have to overcome a 10km obstacle course where they will crawl, run, carry, swim, swing and climb their way to the finish line.

“The previous W.A.R. races were a great success and from that a series was created,” said Maya Hanna, sales and marketing manager at Wadi Adventure.

“With the growing popularity of one-day assault course themed races of the tough guy, tough mudder and Spartan genre, W.A.R. has definitely established itself as one of the region’s finest.

“The diversity of Wadi Adven ture’s obstacles and activities lends itself very well for such an event, where weekend warriors and seasoned athletes can go head to head across an unknown and sometimes frankly absurd set of challenges.”

There are six sections to choose from with categories in Elite, A, B, C, D and E, with each catered for different fitness levels and running abilities. For instance, Elite is for super fit while category E is for beginners.

“To attract more people of different abilities to the race, Wadi Adventure gave people a choice to go for the win or just complete the course and have fun,” explained Hanna.

Unique: Participants will have to navigate through a 10km obstacle course.

“The whole atmosphere will be vibrant. Competitors’ family and friends as well as spectators will also be at the venue and they will be able to witness true tests of strength and endurance.”

She added: “And their presence will set up a fantastic atmosphere with many different groups cheering, supporting and helping one another complete obstacles. And after the race a delicious buffet awaits the competitors so that they can refuel the body.”

Competitors aged 16-years and above can apply, and Hanna had some words of advice for those who want to compete, by saying: “Just push your limits and challenge yourself. It’s going to be harder and better than ever before.” Registration closes on January 11, before midnight. For registration details, log on to www.premieronline.com
