  • EPL star: Kanoute.

It’s not everyday children can showcase their talent in front of a former Premier League player but that will certainly be the case for those who compete in The Kanoute Cup.

On Friday, August 28 from 10:00 to 15:00, host and 2007 African Footballer of the Year Frederic Kanoute will be watching from the sidelines as budding footballers take part in the five-a-side tournament at Dubai World Trade Centre.

So far, entries have been very positive with approximately 70 per cent of places filled up. And there’s still time to join with registrations closing on Monday. There are three age groups – Under-8s, Under-10s and Under-12s with eight teams in each category.

“It’s a pre-season tournament for the kids before they go back to their academies,” said Russ Wilson Junior, head coach at KAFO Academy, organisers of the event. “It’s a good chance for the academies to have some match practice before they start the new football season in September.”

    Expert guidance: KAFO.

He added: “Last year’s tournament was a huge success given it was our first one since Frederic Kanoute opened his KAFO Academy. Last year we had 32 teams across five different age groups which proved to be very popular.

“This year we have narrowed it down to three age groups so it’s a good chance for teams to get involved and play in an exciting tournament.”

Squads must consist of no more than eight players with entry fees costing Dh800 per team, which includes a match shirt for each player.

They will play 12 minute games with the top sides from their group advancing to the Cup competition, while the bottom teams will play in the Plate category. Winners and runners-up of each age category will receive their medals and trophy from ex-Malian international Kanoute.

Kanoute, 37, knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level, picking up two UEFA Cups and Copa del Reys with Sevilla in a career that saw him play for Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Lyon and China’s Beijing Guoan.

With his vast knowledge of the game, Kanoute’s academy – KAFO – has become one of the popular football coaching centres in Dubai since launching last year.

Junior added: “This looks set to be another successful tournament and it will be a great chance to play football in a great venue at Dubai World Trade Centre, while they can also make new friends ahead of the new season.

“The presence of Kanoute, who has played at the highest level will also be a big boost where they can also get their photos taken with him.”
