  • America will attempt to retain the Ryder Cup when they face Europe in Paris this week.

Here, we take a look at the 12 players in captain Jim Furyk’s team for the biennial contest at Le Golf National which gets underway on Friday.

TIGER WOODS: The 14-time major winner boasts a poor record in his seven appearances at the Ryder Cup, with 17 defeats in 33 matches. His stunning win at the Tour Championship will be a timely boost as he bids to lead America to back-to-back titles.

PHIL MICKELSON: Another veteran with a poor overall record and the left-hander needed a wild card to secure a place in the team. Claimed his first win since 2013 earlier this season in Mexico and has four top-six finishes to add to a mixed year to date.

BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: Won his second FedEx Cup play-off event in as many weeks with victory at the Dell Technologies Championship on September 3. The 25-year-old looks certain to be playing with Woods in the fourballs and foursomes this weekend.

RICKIE FOWLER: Won two of his three matches in 2016, including a crucial singles victory over Justin Rose. Has shown solid form in 2018, finishing second at the Masters and five top-10 finishes. Loves match-play and would form a lethal partnership with close friend Justin Thomas.

JORDAN SPIETH: The three-time major winner has struggled all year with putting woes and swing issues and has not won since the Open at Royal Birkdale last July. The Texan may boast a mixed record of 4-2-3 at Ryder Cups but is still a key lieutenant for the Americans.

JUSTIN THOMAS: The 2017 PGA Tour Player of the Year has two wins in 2018 and finished in a tie for sixth at the PGA Championship. Technically a rookie, the 24-year-old has the quality game and steely confidence to cause problems for Europe.

TONY FINAU: Finished in the top-10 in the first three majors of the year as well as second and fourth place finishes in the first two FedEx Cup play-off events. If he can gather some momentum in Paris, he could take over the fast greens with his powerful game.

WEBB SIMPSON: His four-shot win at Sawgrass in May was his first win in over five years. At 33, he is still showing his vast talents, with a 10th place finish in the US Open and 12th in the Open Championship at Carnoustie. Could partner Bubba Watson in the four balls where the pair are unbeaten.

BUBBA WATSON: The two-time Masters champion has lost eight of his 11 matches at the Ryder Cup. Missed out on selection in 2016 despite being ranked world No7 at the time. His three wins this year has cemented his place in the side.

BROOKS KOEPKA: Since scoring three points from his four matches on debut at Hazeltine in 2016, the 28-year-old has gone on to become one of the best players in the world, winning three majors in the last 15 months. Will be a key cog in the American wheel.

DUSTIN JOHNSON: The world No1 has three wins this season and also finished third at the US Open and in a tie for 10th at the Masters. Has shown he can consistently challenge at the top of the leaderboard and should be a force in Paris this weekend.

PATRICK REED: Has been a crucial part of the America teams in Gleneagles and Hazeltine, famously beating Rory McIlroy in a thrilling singles match. Won his first major title at this year’s Masters and went on to finish fourth at the US Open. Has struggled for form since then.
