  • In the swing of it: McIlroy and Mickelson learning the Emirati culture.

Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson got to grips with Emirati culture in a fun-filled opening act to Thursday’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

As the biggest names in golf prepare to descend on the UAE, the pair got ready for the tournament by putting their own twist on traditional Emirati Al Razfa dancing.

Holding aloft their clubs, McIlroy and Mickelson swayed to the sounds of Emirati drums and chants as they learnt the finer art of Al Razfa – a dance traditionally performed by male warriors who brandish and twirl sticks.

Speaking ahead of the Abu Dhabi tournament, McIlroy admitted it was enjoyable to learn about the local culture.

“That was a bit of fun and a great way to get into the rhythm of the season,” said the 24-year-old.

“I enjoyed learning the traditional Al Razfa dance and putting my own spin on it. It’s harder than it looks – some skilful finger work and balancing is needed here.

“I suspect it’s like golf, practice, practice and practice can make the difference but anything can happen when you have to go out there and perform.”

Mickelson, who returns to the UAE capital for the first time since 2011, echoed the words of McIlroy.

“I love learning about different cultures, and although I have been to Abu Dhabi before, this was a chance to really experience and understand the Emirates’ traditions a little better,” said the American.

McIlroy and Mickelson headline a strong line-up of the world’s best players, who will all being competing for the coveted Falcon Trophy.

This year’s competitors include current world No3, Henrik Stenson, as well as Spaniard Sergio Garcia, who surged up the rankings to world No10 after winning the Thailand Golf Championship towards the end of 2013.

Three-time Abu Dhabi champion Martin Kaymer also returns to the capital, along with Italian prodigy and Abu Dhabi Golf Ambassador Matteo Manassero.

Former world No1, Luke Donald, and three-time major champions Padraig Harrington complete one of the toughest fields in the tournament’s history.

Tickets and Championship packages for the Championship are available via the event’s official website (www.abudhabigolfchampionship.com) and Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.ae) at AED50 for a daily pass and AED150 for a four-day pass.
