  • Star pairing: Stenson (l) and Rose proved an unbeatable team at Gleneagles.

As the dust settles on the 2014 Ryder Cup and Team Europe's celebrations come to an end, our man Joy Chakravarty provides his ratings of the 24 players who took part in the iconic golf tournament.

So who soared at Gleneagles and who had their wings clipped? Find out here…

    TEAM EUROPE

    Justin Rose 9/10
    Played 5 Won 3 Halved 2 Lost 0

Won the most points and was the best player of the Ryder Cup. Formed an unbeatable partnership with Stenson and played the match of the tournament in Saturday’s fourball. Fought back brilliantly in the singles against Mahan.

    Henrik Stenson 8/10
    Played 4 Won 3 Halved 0 Lost 1

The only mistake Stenson made was in missing that four-footer putt against Reed to halve the match. Despite a bad back, fought superbly against the best American player in view, and was just awesome in the company of Rose before that.

    Graeme McDowell 8/10
    Played 3 Won 3 Halved 0 Lost 0

The only European with a perfect record, McDowell was brilliant in his fightback against Spieth in the opening single which justified the faith captain McGinley put in him. Also, was superb in shepherding Dubuisson the first two days.

    Jamie Donaldson 8/10
    Played 4 Won 3 Halved 0 Lost 1

Apart from being remembered as the man who did not have to make the winning putt – his shot to a inches was conceded – the Welshman made an unforgettable debut. He flourished in the company of Westwood.

    Victor Dubuisson 8/10
    Played 3 Won 2 Halved 1 Lost 0

So much for pre-conceived notions about the reclusive Frenchman not fitting into the scheme of Team Europe! In the company of McDowell, he was just awesome in the foursomes before halving an inconsequential single.

    Rory McIlroy 7/10
    Played 5 Won 2 Halved 2 Lost 1

Apart from beating Fowler comprehensively in the singles and putting the first blue point on the board on Sunday, McIlroy never reached the level that we have seen him achieve earlier in the summer with his two major wins.

    Sergio Garcia 7/10
    Played 4 Won 2 Halved 1 Lost 1

In the company of McIlroy, Garcia was expect to blitz the opposition. Came into his own very late on Saturday with that stunning second shot to 18, and on Sunday where he shot five-under for last five holes to beat Furyk.

    Lee Westwood 6/10
    Played 4 Won 2 Halved 0 Lost 2

Now the second most successful European Ryder Cup star, he was excellent in breaking Donaldson into the tournament as they were wonderful in foursomes. Played well in his singles against Walker, but the American played even better.

    Martin Kaymer 6/10
    Played 4 Won 1 Halved 2 Lost 1

Apart from his emphatic victory over Bubba in the singles and the inspiration to Rose on the 18th hole on Saturday afternoon, Kaymer could have had a much better outing. Especially, as he made hot starts every time, but fizzled thereafter.

    Thomas Bjorn 3/10
    Played 3 Won 0 Halved 1 Lost 2

Two out of the three points we give Bjorn is for actually making it to the team after gap of 10 years. Otherwise, things just went down for the Dane after a bright start in the company of Kaymer on Friday.

    Stephen Gallacher 2/10
    Played 2 Won 0 Halved 0 Lost 2

Being the local hero, the pressure was always going to be immense on the Scotsman, but one did expect a lot more than just the spirited fight he put up against Mickelson in the singles. A personal high for him though.

    Ian Poulter 2/10
    Played 3 Won 0 Halved 2 Lost 1

One magic shot in the entire tournament is just not acceptable from someone of the stature of Poulter. He did not win a single match, and could only halve his single against the weakest American player Simpson.

    TEAM USA

    Patrick Reed 9/10
    Played 4 Won 3 Halved 1 Lost 0

Sensational debut by the 24-year-old, who not just took on the Europeans, but also the 45,000 spectators at Gleneagles with his celebrations. Finished as the top American and formed a great pairing with Spieth.

    Jordan Spieth 8/10
    Played 4 Won 2 Halved 1 Lost 1

Another rookie who excelled and did extremely well except for a stretch of three holes on the back nine in his singles against McDowell that effectively lost him the match. You will hear about him for years to come.

    Jimmy Walker 8/10
    Played 5 Won 1 Halved 3 Lost 1

Walker really was unlucky not to finish with at least three wins, but he beat Westwood comprehensively in the singles, and did extremely well in the company of Rickie Fowler against star European pairings.

    Matt Kuchar 5/10
    Played 4 Won 1 Halved 0 Lost 3

Played very well, but could only win his singles match. Poorly handled by captain Watson, as he preferred his solidity as a defensive weapon rather than an attacking option by pairing him with three different partners.

    Rickie Fowler 5/10
    Played 5 Won 0 Halved 3 Lost 2

Fowler is yet to win a Ryder Cup match in two appearances, but along with Walker, was a formidable pairing and unlucky to halve matches they should have won. Got a thrashing by McIlroy in the singles though.

    Phil Mickelson 5/10
    Played 3 Won 2 Halved 0 Lost 1

Benched for the whole of Saturday, he beat local favourite Gallacher in the singles, and then hijacked the American post-match conference with his veiled criticism of Tom Watson. Another player poorly used by the captain.

    Hunter Mahan 5/10
    Played 4 Won 1 Halved 1 Lost 2

Won Saturday fourballs with Furyk and played much better than the results. However, he had no business halving his singles with Rose after being four-up before the turn. Will have nightmares about the 18th hole.

    Jim Furyk 4/10
    Played 4 Won 1 Halved 0 Lost 3

It was just the continuation of the season for Furyk. The veteran played great, but did not get the desired results. Has now lost more Ryder Cup matches than any American, including the classic duel on Sunday against Garcia.

    Keegan Bradley 4/10
    Played 3 Won 1 Halved 0 Lost 2

Watson should have used Bradley on Saturday even if he wanted to bench a tired Mickelson. That took the mojo out of the usually exuberant American and he looked like a shadow of himself in the singles loss to Donaldson.

    Zach Johnson 3/10
    Played 3 Won 0 Halved 1 Lost 2

Was never at his best with Mahan and Kuchar in the foursomes, and the only half point he put up on the board came in the final singles against Dubuisson, after the fate of the Ryder Cup had already been sealed.

    Bubba Watson 3/10
    Played 3 Won 0 Halved 0 Lost 3

Bubba’s great for the game, but not for the US Ryder Cup team. Lost all three matches, but he did feature in that amazing fourball match against Rose and Stenson. Full points for working up the crowd on the first tee.

    Webb Simpson 2/10
    Played 2 Won 0 Halved 1 Lost 1

Turned out to be a poor wildcard selection, chosen by Tom Watson only to partner Bubba Watson, but played only match with him. Had a good battle with Poulter but lost against the out-of-form Englishman.
