  • Green oasis: The AD City Golf Club is a great place to play golf in the heart of the city.

The UAE has seen some of the world’s top players come and go during the Desert Swing of the European Tour with Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher and Pablo Larrazabal triumphing in Dubai and Abu Dhabi recently, and you could be a golf champion in the country as well – in the Chivas Men’s Open on Friday, February 21.

Hosted by the Abu Dhabi City Golf Club (ADCGC), the competition is for men aged 21 and over. It’s open to players who are “intermediate or advanced”, so this is not a for golfers who have little experience of playing the sport.

ADCGC hosts many golf competitions but this is one of the prestigious events for the club, says Steve Johns, Head PGA Golf Professional at ADCGC.

And if you are up for a challenge at the golf course, then you must have a valid Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) handicap score, which will be verified by ADCGC staff, to take part in the competition.

“While we do a lot of beginners and juniors golf events at this club, this is one of our prestigious events in which only a certain level of player is eligible to play,” said Johns.

“When you enter, you have to have a valid EGF handicap. A good majority of golfers who do play have a handicap. In this country it’s purely done on a computer system which clubs here in the UAE have access to. Every golf club (in the UAE) uses the same system and we will be able to check and verify the scores."

Entry fees are Dh349 for visitors, while ADCGC members pay Dh175 for the 18-hole tournament. Included in the entry fee is a Tshirt, gift bag, as well as food and beverages.

Prizes are available to the topthree placed participants as well as different categories including lowest gross, lowest net, first and second in the handicap category 0-15, and first and second in category 16-28.

The annual competition is only in its second edition with 98 players participating in last year’s event, which was deemed a huge success and Johns says 2014 looks set to be a repeat.

“We have had already about 60 per cent full so far and more people continue to enter,” said Johns.

With its beautiful location in the heart of the capital, Johns says the golfers will adore the venue.

“We want to give exposure to the golf club. It’s a very friendly and social golf club. (The competition) is great value for money. There are great prizes and it’s a great atmosphere. We had 40 or 50 per cent of non-members playing last year and they were astonished how good the golf course was. Up to 20 people became new members after entering last year’s tournament,” said Johns.

Entering the competition is simple. Just contact ADCGC on 02 4459600 or visit the club in person for an entry form. Entry forms must be filled in and returned by February 13 with the draw to be announced three days later.

In the case of over-subscription there will be a handicap ballot. Tee-off times are between 07:00 to 13:30, with dinner and trophy presentations taking place at 19:00. Whether you win or lose, it will be a challenge you will relish!
