  • Cub class: The series will rotate groups to avoid the same team from playing every round.

Some of UAE’s best youth golf will be on display with the inaugural Troon Golf Junior Inter-Club series kicking off later this month.

The competition begins at Abu Dhabi Golf Club on April 26 and runs until November 15 when the final and prize-giving ceremony takes place at The Address Montgomerie Dubai.

While there are many existing youth golf tournaments in the UAE, where Troon Golf is trying to distinguish its series is with a focus on team play between golf clubs.

“Troon Golf believes that getting groups together to form teams and compete against rival golf clubs is an excellent way of promoting competition for kids in a fun, relaxed atmosphere that doesn’t focus solely on individual performance,” said Rhys Beecher, director of instruction at The Address Montgomerie Dubai.

Registration for the series is closed and the five teams have already been selected. Four competitors will form a team and the top three scores based on handicap will be the collective score.

The nine-hole, five-round series will rotate groups so the same teams don’t participate in each round. Along with Abu Dhabi Golf Club and The Address Montgomerie Dubai, Troon Golf’s three other clubs taking part are The Els Club,

The Track Meydan and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. Danny Jakubowski, group director of instruction at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and Abu Dhabi Golf Club, is hoping to see the series grow by 2015 and welcome more clubs in future editions of the tournament.

“With the coaching teams, tournament coordinators and operational staff all committed and working towards one goal, we hope to see the Troon Golf Junior Inter- Club series eventually branch out to welcome all golf clubs in the UAE to participate, making it the first initiative of its kind,” said Jakubowski.

Troon Golf has properties located in 32 American states and 26 countries, making it the world’s largest golf management company. The company has identified junior golf, especially in the UAE, as a point of emphasis and the series attempts to provide youth more chances for competition.

“The Troon Golf Junior Inter- Club series will promote interaction between players and parent involvement, and will provide more opportunities for junior golfers to actively become a part of the golfing community,” said Beecher.

While the competition will be high, the series aims to do more than just celebrate the winners. Along with player development, the tournament appeals to friends and families to have fun watching their juniors in action.

“We do encourage friends and families to come,” Jakubowski told Sport360°. “In the future we want to invite all the UAE golf clubs to participate in the series. We want to make it the best entertainment for the kids. It’s a spectator friendly sport.

“It’s nice to see kids learn, showcase their skills and it’s all worth watching people of the future playing sport.” These youngsters could give a glimpse into the future of golf.
