UAE golf round-up: Seven-year-old Cooper gives mini masterclass

  • Young-stars: The competition was fierce in the Troon Golf Junior Series.

    Seven-year-old Sean Cooper, one of the youngest participants in the inaugural Troon Golf Junior Inter-Club Series, was the star as he led his team, The Track Meydan Golf, to a convincing win.

    At Abu Dhabi Golf Club, the region’s future golfing stars got together, with all five of the UAE’s Troon Golf facilities represented by teams of junior golfers ranging from age seven through to 16.

    With Cooper, who’s coached by Mark Gregson-Walters at the Grass Roots Golf Programme, shooting an even-par round, The Track Meydan Golf combined for a total score of 79 points, which was a massive nine points better than The Address Montgomerie Dubai (70 points).

    Cooper pipped Jennifer Buchanan from The Address Montgomerie Dubai to win the Individual Net prize, while Abu Dhabi Golf Club’s Amalia Arredondo claimed the Nearest to the Pin prize.

    Al Heloo siblings dominate Ajyal Golf grand final
    The Al Heloo family dominated the grand final of the 2013-14 Ajyal Golf Championship-Par 3 League, which was hosted recently by Abu Dhabi City Golf Club.

    The Dubai-based Obaid Al Heloo took the top honours in the the Boys A Division with a gross score of 37 over nine holes.

    Finishing one shot back was Mohammed Al Hajeri of Abu Dhabi with a gross 38, while Abu Dhabi’s Khalid Al Mutawa was third with 40.

    Obaid’s sister Reema dominated the girls’ division with a gross score of 32, finishing 13 shots ahead of the second-placed Alyazya Al Shehhi (45) of Sharjah.

    Reema also won the Closest to the Pin competition.

    Alia Al Emadi of Dubai (gross 32) was the winner of Division B, which was played over six holes with both boys and girls competitors.

    Khalifa Abdulla of Dubai finished second with a score of 36.

    Yas Links members raise AED 123,130 for charities
    Yas Links general manager, Chris White, and club captains Christine Khan and Ronald Herman, invited the Make-A-Wish Foundation and The Future Centre for Future Needs to the club to present them both a cheque for AED 61,565 each (AED 123,130 total).

    In order to support these incredible charities, Yas Links held a Captains Day Charity Event which comprised of a day of golf, dining and several other fun activities.

    Funds were raised in various ways from selling mulligans to collecting penalties, selling raffle tickets to a live auction, apart from donations.

    Team Mashmoor lands BMW Skills top honour 
    Captain Eli Mashmoor’s team won the second qualifying round of the BMW Skills Challenge, which was recently hosted by the European Tour Performance Institute at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

    Players were challenged on their putting, chipping, pitching, bunkers and driving skills.

    With a total of 127.6 points, Mashmoor’s team won by seven points and earned BMW driving experiences apart from advancing to the semi-finals in October.

    Open to all UAE golfers, the next BMW Skills Challenge round will be held on Thursday, May 22 at 4:00pm.
