  • Swing school: Learn from the pros during the four-day course.

Golf can be an intimidating game and difficult to pick up, but Craeg Deery at Yas Links Golf Club is offering his Learn Golf in a Week course to get anyone interested up to par.

The course starts on Tuesday, September 23 and runs for four days, covering the basic fundamentals and skills needed to play golf.

Deery admittedly can’t turn beginners into the next Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy, but he’s striving to teach newcomers and improve the skills of those who are already familiar with the game.

“I’ve had everyone do this course, from literally the person who’s never seen a golf club before, all the way down to actually quite good golfers who maybe haven’t taken lessons previously,” said Deery.

While Deery also offers individual lessons that are more personalised and deal with the more complex aspects of the sport, the 'Learn Golf in a Week' course is a group lesson designed to bring a players up to speed at once.

“I’ve always kept it as a group class as well because I think the players feed off of each other,” said Deery. “I’ll always see them by the second or third evening sort of help each other little bit. You’ve got a group of friends to actually go out and play a round of par two with.”

In the first session, Deery will lay out the fundamentals, including how to hold and grip the club, as well as proper posture.

Players will learn what the clubs do, how many clubs should be in a bag and the terminology. From there, they’ll first start with the half-swing and build up to a full-swing.

The second day will be working on everything taught in the first sessions as players will get more comfortable with the full-swing and focus more on the power, weight transfer and movement.

After using only the irons in the first two days, the third evening will incorporate the full set of clubs as players transfer their skills from the shorter or medium clubs to the longer clubs.

Finally, the fourth session will focus on the short game and what it takes to simply get the ball in the hole. Players will learn chipping, pitching and putting techniques.

Included in the course is a month-long practice pass, starting from the first day of the course, as well as a complimentary individual lesson with Deery to continue refining skills.

“I don’t think anyone would sell golf as a sport that you can pick up once a year and be good at,” said Deery. “It’s something that people do dedicate a lot of time to, even if that is once a week for an hour or two."

The fee for the course is still reduced to a summer discount of Dh695, with the sessions varying in time from Tuesday to Friday.

Whether it’s improving on your game or just getting into the sport for the first time, Learn Golf in a Week is the perfect place to start.
