  • Prime condition: Calisthenics is a combination of traditional gym-based exercises and gymnastics.

Jump, hang and swing your way to a better workout next week, as one of the world’s fastest growing exercise systems comes to the UAE for the first time.

The MultiWorks health and fitness company are putting on a three-day showcase of calisthenics in Dubai from April 24-26, which is an adrenaline-pumping activity that increases people’s strength and flexibility by using their own body weight.

This exciting discipline provides a full-body workout as users stretch, bend and twist on equipment such as monkey bars and medicine balls.

Calisthenics resembles a mixture of traditional gym-based exercises and gymnastics, strengthening the joints, ligaments and tendons while increasing the heart-rate to boost your aerobic fitness levels at the same time.

For trainer Elyssa Lagourgue, the exhibition in the UAE will introduce people of different ages and abilities to a safe and enjoyable new way to keep in shape.

“It is a beautiful thing for the body to do,” the 24-year-old told Sport360°. “Everything is working as one, and it is 100 per cent safe when you are provided with proper guidance.

“Our events in Dubai are open to everyone, from people who have never entered a gym to dedicated gym-goers.

“The biggest thing is to see these cool moves on the bars and how enjoyable they are once you get going. People will also be taught the appropriate techniques by us to get the best results in the safest way possible.”

Calisthenics workouts involve a variety of exercises on the bars, and progressive movements on the floor. The explosive bar work involves stretching and jumping, with the ‘human flag’ activity letting people hang off poles with their arms out straight in a horizontal position.

The MultiWorks events begin next Thursday (April 24) with a free open workshop at Bar Park by Skydive Dubai, starting at 18:00. Those who attend will be given an introduction to calisthenics, as they play on the bars under the tutelage of expert guides.

On the same day, the company are hosting an International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association networking event from 09:00-16:00 at Warehouse Gym in Dubai.

For Dh300 per person, this is an intriguing opportunity for anyone from the fitness industry or those looking to get in to hear speeches from leading health figures from Germany, Poland and the United States.

The calisthenics courses take place on Friday and Saturday, at Warehouse Gym. The all-day sessions cost Dh1,700 and run from 09:00-18:00, with those attending earning their Level 1 certificates.

They are open to both men and women. Children aged 14 and above can attend, but will not receive a certificate.

Lagourgue, who has been practicing the sport for three years, believes the tutelage will allow people to train in an efficient and effective manner.

She said: “Everyone wants to hit the ground running when they start exercising as they want the best results quickly.

“These courses allow people to slow things down and listen to how to do an excellent form of all-body exercise in the best way possible and with the right techniques.

“Once people experience calisthenics, they will see the outstanding potential it has to help them keep fit, build strength and stay healthy.”

MultiWorks professionals are also available to conduct private calisthenics workshops with a view to establishing affiliate gyms.
