  • Stay hydrated: It's crucial that you drink lots of water throughout the day.

It’s that time of year when bugs, infections and viruses are rife, anything from conjunctivitis and stomach bugs to colds and flu. Many people have returned by air from relaxing holidays and airplanes are notorious places for picking up some kind of illness or other. It’s not from breathing in recycled air as many people think: this is an urban myth as the air on the aircraft is fresh and filtered.  It’s the fact that you have so many people in such a confined space so germs can be easily passed on from the toilets, the tray tables, the head and arm rests and any surface with which you may come into contact.

Just think of how many people share a toilet on a long flight without any attendant cleaning it between users.  Then the turnaround leaves little time for a thorough clean of the aircraft before another few hundred people board.

The children go back to school and pass the illness around the classroom, bring it back home and pass it on to parents who take it to work or share it amongst friends.

There are steps we can take to avoid contamination, but we can also boost our immune systems to  avoid catching anything nasty!

    1. Stress suppresses the immune system, but laughter boosts it.  Maintain a positive attitude: even if you do get sick, it won’t seem so bad or last so long. Although research is ongoing, scientists have noted a clear connection between mind and body.

    2. A lack of sleep not only suppresses your immune system, but also your recovery from illness.
    3. A decent diet high in essential nutrients is essential to stay healthy. Apart from plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit, Vitamin A  is very important for a strong immune system, so include dairy and eggs in your diet. Pre and pro-biotics promote healthy digestion and keep the optimal balance between good and bad bacteria.  Studies have also shown that garlic and onions can help fight infection.  Varieties of mushrooms also seem to be gaining a reputation for helping to fight infection.  Ginger is an ancient Ayurvedic remedy to help maintain good health.
    4. Stay hydrated to flush your digestive system and rid your body of toxins. Juicing is a quick and easy way of getting a concentrated shot of vitamins and minerals too.
    5. Regular exercise strengthens your body, enabling you to fight infection.
    6. Alcohol interferes with the absorption of vitamins and minerals. Smoking affects your oxygen uptake. Both make you more susceptible to infection.
    7. Wash your hands. Simple hand washing and sanitising in hospitals helped combat the superbugs.
    8. Prepare food hygienically, e.g., washing it well before eating or cooking, including all work surfaces and ensure thorough washing of dishes
    9. Get outside in the fresh air and sunshine. Fresh air rather than air con is bound to have a positive effect on your health and sunshine not only makes you feel better but is vital for mineral conversion.
    10. As we age, our immune systems become weaker in general, so start to take care of your health from a young age.
