  • Dedicated team: The instructors at Vogue Fitness at CrossFit Yas

A fitness revolution has been taking hold in Abu Dhabi.

Since opening its doors on August 30, Vogue Fitness & CrossFit Yas has brought fresh energy and a new outlook to how people get into shape in the capital.

Outstanding facilities, overlooking the iconic Yas Marina Formula One circuit, and a dedicated team of degree-qualified trainers are on offer.

Approximately 250 members have signed up in the last two months, enjoying a variety of classes and the first-rate equipment. This ever-expanding group includes people of all ages and genders.

They all get to enjoy both traditional gym work and the exciting CrossFit program. It was the latter’s unique methodology, incorporating intensive training, weightlifting, gymnastics and calisthenics, that inspired founders Patrick Hegarty and Billy Graham.

“Here at Vogue Fitness & CrossFit Yas we have three core principles,” Graham said. “Our first one is uniqueness – we are not a traditional gym. We run a CrossFit program alongside a normal gym program, located at Yas Marina and its world-class facilities.

“Secondly is excellence. Our coaching staff are all degree qualified and are the best in the capital.

“Our third and most important pillar is community. We don’t care who you are, where you are from, or your previous physical experience. We will get you fit and you will have fun doing it.”

Vogue Fitness offers personal training, pilates, yoga, weightlifting, non-contact boxing and ‘mums n bubs’ sessions for new parents.

A range of pricing options can be found on their website (www.vfuae.com), including unlimited gym usage and gym classes for Dh900 per month or batches of 10 personal training sessions for Dh3,000-3,500.

But at the core of their business is their dedicated approach to CrossFit’s dynamic strength and conditioning program. The discipline was conceived in the United States in the 1990s, expanding rapidly across the world.

A huge variety of equipment is utilised, including barbells, gymnastic rings, ropes, kettlebells, medicine balls and rowing machines. The company’s group of highly-skilled trainers ensure expert tuition and motivation are on hand. This allows debutants to exercise safely and regular users to continue to be challenged.

One of the trainers is Elliot Simmonds. The 21 year old has excelled in a variety of competitions, including the CrossFit Games European Regionals, and headed to the UAE this August.

“For too long, people have been going into gyms and using bench press and all the machines, but it is not transferring well into everyday life,” the Briton said. “People end up getting bored as it gets monotonous. The good thing about CrossFit is that is based on the ‘unknown and unknowables’, so it is ever-changing.

“We have people doing things they never thought possible. It gets people fitter and healthier, getting them excited about going to the gym and enjoying it.

“The main thing about CrossFit is that we build a community where everyone gets behind each other until the final rep is done.”

Plenty of people have already flooded through the doors at the gym since it opened. A number of VIP visitors have also arrived, including CrossFit founder Greg Glassman and director of training Dave Castro.

“It has been a whirlwind few months,” Graham said. “We have been at the forefront, educating people about the advantages of CrossFit’s methodology. We also have a hugely successful school program with Brighton College Abu Dhabi and a corporate wellness programme with numerous government organisations.

“Our youngest member in our CrossFit programme is 12 and our oldest gym member is 65.”
