  • Going for the record: Burpees pros Eva Clark and Lee Ryan will be taking on the challenge of setting a new Guinness World Record of completing as many burpees as possible in 24 hours.

    Aaaah, burpees!

While most people shy away from doing any more than they absolutely have to, two UAE fitness trainers are staring the fitness world’s arguably most detested move in the face and saying: Bring It!

On January 9 at the Dubai Autodrome, Eva Clark and Lee Ryan will be taking on the challenge of setting a new Guinness World Record of completing as many burpees as possible in 24 hours. Yes, you read that right – 24 hours of burpees.

The duo’s hopes are to raise awareness and, more importantly, funds for the World Child Cancer charity, having set a goal of raising $50,000 with the undertaking of this incredible challenge.

The charity treats children in underdeveloped countries which have been diagnosed with cancer and have limited access to treatment or, where treatment isn’t possible, they provide pain relief.

While the burpee has been around since 1939, when Royal H. Burpee invented the bodyweight movement as a quick, simple way of administering fitness tests, nowadays we know it as a six-count bodyweight movement – popularised due to the likes of CrossFit. That is, it requires the athlete to move through six different positions as quickly as possible: from standing position, both hands on the floor, jump both feet back into plank position, drop to a push-up with chest on the floor, return to plank, jump feet back in and explosively jump up into the air with arms overhead. Phew!

However, before the‘no reps’ start to get thrown around, Lee and Eva will be performing the original burpee, which misses out the chest-to-floor push up – a move slightly less punishing than the move we know today, yet nevertheless especially taxing, especially when performed in high volume.

Neither Eva or Lee are strangers to taking on massive feats of endurance in the name of a bigger cause. Eva took on a massive world record in January for most push-ups in 24 hours, setting a new WR in the process and raising $23,000 for the Maria Cristina foundation.

Lee, in addition to the many marathons under his belt, most recently completing the New York marathon, has previously attempted to set a new record for fastest marathon time with a 20lb weight and in the process raising funds for Bowel Caner UK.

On 9th January, Eva and Lee will be attempting to break not one, but multiple records. They will be gunning for most GWR burpees as individuals in 1 minute (Lee), 1 hour (Eva), 12 hours and 24 hours, and as a male/female due they’re aiming for most burpees in 1min, 1hour, 12 hours, 24 hours, with the current record for the last three standing at 1,000, 5,000 and 8,000 respectively. Both Eva and Lee are expected to aim for 15,000 burpees in the 24 hours.
