  • Under the scanner: Sohag Gazi (c).

Bangladesh off-spinner Sohag Gazi has become the latest bowler to be reported for a suspect bowling action by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

His name was brought to notice following his side’s 177-run defeat against the West Indies in the second one-day international in Grenada.

Match officials expressed concerns over all deliveries of the 23-year-old, in a report submitted to Bangladesh team manager Habibul Bashar.

He will now have to undergo independent analysis of his bowling action within 21 days, although he will still be able to bowl in international cricket.

“The match officials’ report, which was handed over to Bangladesh team manager Habibul Bashar on Saturday, cited concerns about the legality of the 23-year-old’s bowling action for all deliveries”, an ICC statement confirmed.

“Sohag’s bowling action will now be scrutinised further under the ICC process relating to suspected illegal bowling actions reported in Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

“He is required to undergo testing within 21 days, and, during this period, Sohag is permitted to continue bowling in international cricket until the results of the testing are known.”

He joins Prosper Utseya, Saeed Ajmal, Sachithra Senanayake and Kane Williamson as players who have been reported for bowling with a suspect action this year.

Senanayake and Williamson were banned from bowling after undergoing analysis while Ajmal and Utseya are yet to have their actions analysed.

Gazi, however, is expected to play in the third and final match of the series against the West Indies, in Basseterre today (22:30 TEN Cricket). The hosts have already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead after dismissing the Tigers for a paltry 70 in the previous match.

However, batsmen Shamsur Rahman and Nasir Hossain have had poor outing and they could be replaced by Mithun Ali and Mominul Haque. For the visitors, it’s a chance to salvage some pride ahead of their one-off T20 match and the two-Test series.

The West Indies, on their part, could give all-rounder Andre Russell a chance.
