  • Raring to go: Roger Federer has been declared fit to play in the Davis Cup final

Switzerland’s Roger Federer has overcome a back injury and is fit to play in the Davis Cup final against France’s Gael Monfils on Friday.

The 17-time grand slam champion looked in terrific form in last week’s ATP World Tour Finals showpiece event in London, booking a place in the final against Novak Djokovic before withdrawing with a back complaint.

However, Federer, who was back in training on Thursday, is set to lead the line as Switzerland continue to search for their maiden Davis Cup title.

“Things have been going well out there is morning. I was really happy with the way I felt,” Federer told reporters.

“Only the match gives you the answer (to my fitness problems). I’m just pleased that I can play tomorrow and give it a go. Things have been going well.”

Federer’s return to fitness has not been a shock to the France side, with captain Arnaud Clement claiming that his troops have prepared well for the outing.

“It is not a surprise for us, we prepared ouselves to play against Roger and Stan,” said Clement.

Monfils added: “He’s (Federer) had three days to rest and before that he played is best tennis (in London) so it’s all good for him.”

Meanwhile, Stan Wawrinka will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the opening match of the tie, and the Frenchman is relishing a close contest between the pair: “We always play close matches, determination will be the key.”

France will be looking to win their 10th Davis Cup title – the last time they were victorious was back in 2001, when they defeated Australia 3-2 at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.
