Following the second Test between Sri Lanka and India in Colombo, we look at the facts and figures behind the visitors' win that levelled the series.

    – INTERVIEW: Anwar on plotting a permanent Pakistan place
    – FEATURE: How Bangladesh are building to take on the elite

** It’s been nearly five years and 42 Tests since India played a side consisting of eleven right handed batsmen in a Test match.  The last occasion was at Durban during the Boxing Day Test of 2010, which India also won.

** On the opening day, Murali Vijay registered the fourth duck of his Test career – off the fourth ball of the match. Each of his ducks have come away from home – at Kingston in June 2011, Manchester in August 2014, Sydney in January 2015 and now ColomboPSS.

    Vijay (r) is dismissed.

** India’s other opener, Lokesh Rahul (108) – in only his seventh innings – made the second Test hundred of his career. Only the following Indian batsmen have taken fewer innings than Rahul to register two Test centuries: 2 innings – Sourav Ganguly & Rohit Sharma, 3 – Mohd Azharuddin, 5 – Vinod Kambli and 6- Sunil Gavaskar.

** The 164 run stand between Rahul and Virat Kohli is India's second best for the 3rd wicket in Sri Lanka. The best came in the previous Test at Galle when Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli put on 227 runs.

** Rohit Sharma who has two Test centuries – both at home – made his highest score (79) in an away Test in 20 innings, surpassing the 72 he made against New Zealand at Auckland in February 2014. In all, he has now posted three fifties in 11 away Tests.

Sharma (l) on his way to fifty.

** Virat Kohli (78) became the third Indian batsman after Sunil Gavaskar (723 @ an average of 103.29) and Mohd Azharuddin (651 @ 81.38) and the 11th overall to aggregate 600-plus runs in their first five Tests as captain. Kohli’s tally of 657 runs (@ 73.00) now places him sixth among Test captains with most runs after five Tests.

** Virat Kolhi's batting average of 73.00 is the third best by any Test captain with over 500 runs, just below Aussies Don Bradman (101.51) and Steve Smith (92.50). The table below has the details:

Highest batting average as Test captain
    Min 500 runs as captain
Ave Player Nation Mts Inns NO Runs HS 100
    101.51 Don Bradman Australia 24 38 7 3147 270 14 7
    92.50 Steven Smith Australia 3 6 0 555 192 3 1

    58.80 Garry Sobers West Indies 39 71 11 3528 178* 11 15

** Wriddiman Saha (56) made his second 50+ score in Tests, with both coming in successive matches. He had made 60 in the previous Test at Galle.

** Kumar Sangakkara has now been dismissed on four occasions by R Ashwin, all of which coming in this series. Ashwin, therefore, becomes the only bowler in Test cricket to claim Sanga’s wicket in four consecutive innings. Pakistani Saeed Ajmal and Ashwin are the only off-spinners to dismiss him on the most occasions (4) in Tests.

** Sangakkara's aggregate of 50 runs in his final Test match means that in his final 9 innings he managed just 202 runs at 22.44. In prior 9 innings he had aggregated 605 runs @ 59.60, which included two double hundreds.

Sangakkara is granted a guard of honour.

** On the second day, Amit Mishra became the 36th Indian to claim 50 or more wickets in Tests. He is the sixth Indian leggie to achieve this landmark after Anil Kumble (619), BS Chandrasehkar (242), Subash Gupte (149), Narendra Hirwani (66) and Chandu Borde (52). He now has a tally of 55 Test wickets.

** Mishra's figures of 4/43 are now his second best of his career after his 5/71 on debut against Australia at Mohali in October 2008.

** His match figures of 7/72 are the best to date after 15 matches. Mishra has claimed seven wickets in a match on two other ocassions – 7/106 in that Test against Australia and 7/158 against Bangladesh at Chittagong in January 2010. India has won each of those Tests.

** On the third day, Angelo Mathews, recorded his sixth Test 100 and fifth as Sri Lanka captain. Only Mahela Jayawardene (14) and Sangakkara (7) have made more Test 100s for Sri Lanka as captain.

    Mathews celebrates his century.

** It was Mathews’ first Test century against India. His previous best was the 99 (run out!) he made at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai in December 2009. He now has made two Test centuries against England and Pakistan and 1 each against Australia and India.

** Mathews became the fifth Sri Lankan captain to register a Test hundred against India after Duleep Mendis (1), Sanath Jayasuriya (1), Mahela Jayawardene (1) and Kumar Sangakkara (3).

** M Vijay, who made a duck in the first innings and 82 in the second, became the first Indian batsman to follow a duck with a 50 in the same Test on Sri Lankan soil.

** On the fourth day, Ajinkya Rahane (126) registered his fourth Test century of his career – all of which coming away from home. Interestingly, his top six Test scores have come in six different countries, as listed below:

    Runs Opposition Venue Month, Year
    147 Australia Melbourne December 2014
126 Sri Lanka ColomboPSS August 2015
118 New Zealand Wellington February 2014
    103 England Lord's July 2014
    98 Bangladesh Fatullah June 2015
96 South Africa Durban December 2013

** Tharindu Kaushal now has 23 wickets to his credit after five Tests. Among Sri Lankan spinners only Ajantha Mendis (34) and Dilruwan Perera (27) have managed to claim more wickets than Kaushal after their first five matches.

** Sangakkara ended his Test career with a tally of 12,400 runs. Only Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Ricky Ponting (13,378), Jacques Kallis (13,289) and Rahul Dravid (13,288) have made more Test runs than Sangakkara.

** His Test average of 57.40 is the tenth highest among batsmen with 1,500 or more Test runs. Sangakkara is number one among the eleven players with 10,000+ Test runs. The next best in this group is South African Jacques Kallis, whose batting average is 55.37.

** On the final day, Ashwin 's 12th five wicket haul extended his tally of wickets in this series to 17, which makes him the highest wicket-taker by an Indian bowler in a series in Sri Lanka. Harbhajan Singh's 16 wickets in 3 Tests in the 2008 series was the previous best.

    Ashwin takes another wicket.

** Ashwin now has 141 wickets in 27 Tests. Among Test spinners only Aussies Clarrie Grimmett (147), Bill O’Reilly (144) and Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal (144) have claimed more wickets than Ashwin after appearing in their first 27 Test matches.

** The victory by 278 runs is India's 4th biggest in terms of runs and their second biggest away from home. India's 279 run win at Leeds in 1986 still remains their biggest in terms of runs away from home.

** This win was India's first after nine Tests and 399 days. Their last win came at Lord's on July 21, 2014. Since then the side has lost six Tests and has drawn three, all of which away from home.

    India's last Test win.

** It was Virat Kohli's first win as Test captain at the fifth attempt. His overall record: won 1, lost 2, drawn 2

** It was India's 2nd successive win in Tests at the P Sara Oval, Colombo, while it was Sri Lanka's 4th defeat in their last 5 Tests at this venue since 2010.

** India's Test record in Sri Lanka now reads: 20 Tests – won 5, lost 7, drawn 8.
