  • Spaniards Sanyo Gutierrez and Juani Mieres fought with their backs against the wall to win the international padel title at the third Nad Al Sheba (NAS) Sports Tournament at the NAS Sports Complex on Sunday night.

Watched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, Gutierrez and Mieres were trailing 1-4 in the final after being a break down in the third and deciding set.

But the Spaniards stormed back into the match as they won the next five games to get the better of fellow countrymen Juan Martin Diaz and Maxi Sanchez 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Sheikh Saeed Bin Juma Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Padel Tennis Association (UAE PA) gave away the prizes in the presence of Ahmed Bin Manana, Vice President of the Higher Organising Committee; Mohammed Al Mutaiwei, Vice President of the UAEPA and Hassan Al Mazrouei, Tournament Director.

Meanwhile, the second night of the futsal competition witnessed two hat-tricks and two identical 8-1 scorelines.

Wael Mohammed Khamis scored a hat-trick to help His Highness Court (HHC) hammer Dhawu 8-1, while Fernandinho’s triple was instrumental in last year’s runnersup Al Jokar as they powered past Sport 4 All with a similar score.

In two other matches played on Sunday, Tornado blanked the Zabeel Office Team 4-0, while Surprise fought back from a one-goal deficit to secure a 4-1 win against Al Ain Youth.

Dubai Municipality, Dubai Club for Special Needs and the Hamdan Heritage Centre were almost through to the semi-finals of the Wheelchair Basketball competition being held in Al Ghusais.

Dubai Municipality defeated Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) 37-21, while Hamdan Heritage Centre got the better of Public Prosecution 46-15.

Hosts Dubai Club for Special Needs beat Dubai Ambulance 38- 22 in the third of the three matches played on Sunday. In the fourth game, Dubai Sports Channel registered their first win in two games with a 33-10 result, leaving Dubai Police without a win after three encounters.

All three teams now have one match left in the preliminary rounds. But that would hardly be of any consequence as Public Prosecution, DEWA, Union Co-Operative and Dubai Sports Channel have just one win and are still in with a chance of making it to the knockout stages.

On the other hand, Dubai Police, Dubai Ambulance and Dubai Duty Free are yet to win a single match so far, and are out of the reckoning. The final round of the preliminary stage will be held today
