  • Enjoy the experience: Bring along just about any car and take it for a spin.

Dubai Autodrome will open its doors to advanced drivers and riders to test their cars and bikes during the Track Day this Friday (June 6).

Since its debut in 2004, Track Days have become a popular event on the Autodrome's calendar, and it is easy to see why it has become such a huge success.

Paul Velasco, communications manager at the circuit, said: “We’ve held a lot of these track days with the aim of drivers and riders enjoying the experience and excitement on a race track without the constraints or dangers that come with driving on the roads.

“Whether it’s a sports car or a normal bike, you want to see how fast it can go, so this provides a perfect opportunity for them.”

To be eligible to ride or drive on the track, you must either hold a valid driving licence and have participated in a novice event at the venue; hold a current competitions licence; or show proof via a confirmation letter, or club record cards that the rider/driver has taken part in a track day at other venues.

The Track Day will be held on the 3.56km national circuit, which is 2km less than the full Grand Prix track. You will be on a modern and challenging track for approximately one hour (and no more than two), zipping down a high speed straight and manoeuvring technical corners.

With safety high on the priority list of the Dubai Autodrome, Velasco says participants will strictly have to adhere to rules and regulations.

He said: “Obviously we take health and safety very seriously. All vehicles must be road-worthy. The riders who do want to go on the track with their bikes will need to wear full leathers and boots. Helmets are also compulsory and can be hired for Dh50.

“It’s very structured, very organised and no room for manoeuvring. People must stick to the rules on the day. And we expect them all to be disciplined.”

Safety cover on the track is run to strict international standards, marshal’s posts are manned, and safety trucks, ambulance and paramedic services will be made available throughout the event.

Unlike the riders, drivers can wear anything they feel comfortable in. Velasco stressed that the aim is to enjoy the experience as it is not a race and no prizes are on offer.

And Dubai Autodrome staff encourage drivers to bring a passenger (for an additional fee). Velasco says it will be a day to remember, adding: “It’s one of those thrilling experiences. You will be with like-minded people who enjoy these track days.

“Plus there is a social element where it is fun and you get to meet new people.

“Generally speaking, those who have done it once have come back regularly.”
