The main track is for senior riders on 65cc, 85cc and above class bikes, while the junior track is exclusively for 50cc riders from ages four to eight years.

Originally founded over 25 years ago, Dubai Motocross Club is now being run and supported by the Emirates Motor Sports Federation, a non-profit government organisation whose mission is to promote and develop grassroots motorsport in the UAE.

With the involvement of EMSF, the club’s committee have roped in the services of a group of volunteers passionate about the sport.

Scott Kefford, Dubai Motocross Club’s outgoing chairman, is more than happy to stay involved.

“As a volunteer, I’m happy to continue and help expand the motorsport here in the UAE,” said Kefford.

“It’s gaining momentum and it’s only going to improve, so it’s a great opportunity to keep involved.”

The club has 140 to 150 regular members ranging in age, ability and background.

Like many other sports in the region, Motocross is continuously growing and participation is steadily on the rise.

“There’s riders from nearly every nationality,” said Kefford.

“We have a good local, UAE contingent and a lot of local talent. “Motocross is becoming so big and so popular here in the UAE.

“It’s a challenging sport for you personally. It’s not so much about racing or being the best rider out there, but it’s about challenging yourself and getting to a standard where you’re happy with it.”

Dubai Motocross Club’s main event every year is the DMX, an eight-round championship which runs from October to April during the racing season.

Seven of the eight rounds count for the championship with a gradual increase in points from the third round onwards.

Kefford has found the DMX to not only draw a large crowd of riders, but spectators as well.

“The grandstand is getting fuller and fuller, which is quite impressive,” said Kefford. “We’ve always had a few spectators but it’s start.

“Even the local families are starting to come out and support us and watch. It’s quite good.”

The fee for a single member is Dh1,200 per year, while for a family it is Dh1,500 annually.

For those just wanting to practice without becoming a member, the fee is Dh100 per weekday and Dh150 per day on the weekend
