Philip Ellis is a driving experience manager at YMC and he is keen for people to realise that there is more to Yas Marina Circuit than just the Formula One.

“This weekend is an open house for anybody that would like to come and try one of the many experiences that we have at the circuit,” Ellis said.

“We have Aston Martin Driving Experience, YAS 3000 Single Seater which is amazing, we have Drift Taxi where you can be a passenger drifting around the track, karting, the Camaro Drag where you can go drag racing on a world class strip and the Drift Sprint.”

Drifting is a thrilling experience that you usually only get to witness in Fast and Furious. The kind staff at Yas Marina let Sport360° test out the Toyota GT 86’s and have a drift head-to-head race on a mirrored track.

The race begins with the gripping red light start as you attempt to gain any yards on your opponent. Then you encounter the brake-screeching drifts to soar you and your passenger’s adrenaline levels.

Followed by the competitive nature of seeing where your rival is on their track compared to you evokes heart-thumping enjoyment – especially if you win.

Luke Kitley, a circuit instructor and professional driver at Yas, believes the drift sprint race is an enjoyable experience that brings out the competitive side of the participants.

“You should come down on Saturday to get a full feel of what the Yas experience is all about,” says Kitley.

“The drifting always brings out the competitive nature of people. Confidence is key. You have to really understand how to move the weight around in a car.

“You want to be hard on the brakes to move all the weight to the front and obviously the back-end becomes the lightest part so this is your opportunity to accelerate and initiate over-steer.

“Sometimes we see people get frustrated with this but at the same time it’s very rewarding when you get it absolutely spot on.”

The purpose of the weekend is to try out the numerous activities on offer at Yas Marina Circuit.

People can have some fun and try out some driving. To promote the various types of driving experiences, the more you sample throughout the day, the cheaper the price will turn out to be.

A special 20 per cent discount is available on Yas Drift Sprint and Chevrolet Camaro Drag, as well as a 10 per cent discount on the Yas Radical SST and other offers.

The experiences start at 13:00 and run until 22:00.
