    Women’s 100m freestyle heats (20:02 UAE time)

One to watch: Cate Campbell (AUS)

2012 Olympic champion: Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED) 53.00

2015 World champion: Bronte Campbell (AUS) 52.52

World record: Cate Campbell (AUS) 52.06, July 2, 2016

The plot: Just last month, Cate Campbell stormed to a new world record in this event at the Brisbane Grand Prix. Between the sensational Campbell sisters, who are fastest in the world this year, Sarah Sjostrom, who is having a fantastic Games so far, and defending champion Kromowidjojo, an American-less podium is highly likely in the 100 free. Italian Federica Pellegrini is also in the mix.

Arab spotlight: Syrian Yusra Mardini, representing Olympic Refugee Team returns after winning her heat in the 100 fly.

Second olympic medal for me in #riodejaneiro 😊💙💛 silver in 200 free💪🏽

    Men’s 200m backstroke heats (20:25 UAE time)

One to watch: Mitch Larkin (AUS)

2012 Olympic champion: Tyler Clarey (USA) 1:53.41

2015 World champion: Mitch Larkin (AUS) 1:53.58

World record: Aaron Peirsol (USA) 1:51.92, July 31, 2009

The plot: Larkin ended America’s eight-year dominance in the 200m backstroke at the World Championships when he took gold in Kazan last year. The Aussie is one of the world’s best backstrokers at the moment but missed out on the podium in the 100m finishing fourth in a race that saw American Ryan Murphy set an Olympic record to take gold. Murphy again will be one to watch in the 200. He is second-fastest in the world this year over the distance and will be buoyed with confidence from his 100m victory.

    Men’s 200m IM heats (21:09 UAE time)

One to watch: Michael Phelps (USA), Kosuke Hagino (JPN)

2012 Olympic champion: Michael Phelps (USA) 1:54.27

2015 World champion: Ryan Lochte (USA) 1:55.81

World record: Ryan Lochte (USA) 1:54.00, July 28, 2011

The plot: Hagino, Phelps and Lochte are the top-three in the world this year in the 200IM. Already a gold medallist in the 400IM in Rio, Hagino will be looking to do the medley double and spoil the Phelps- Lochte stranglehold on this event.

Arab spotlight: Ahmed Mathlouthi (TUN) in Heat 1, Mohamed Hussein Khaled (EGY) in Heat 2
