The Games aren’t just about medals as USA’s Abbey D’Agostino proved this week. In the heats of the 5,000m, she displayed incredible sportsmanship after helping Nikki Hamblin back to her feet after the pair tangled.

Here are five more examples of the Olympic spirit.

    ANDREW TURNER AND JACKSON QUINONEZ

China’s track star Liu Xiang was injured in London 2012 heats of the 110m hurdles and was helped off the track by his two rivals.

    DEREK REDMOND

At the 1992 Games, the 400m Brit tore his hamstring towards the end of the semi-final race but was helped to the finish line by his father.

    SHAWN CRAWFORD

He was awarded 200m silver in ’08 after Churandy Martina and Wallace Spearmon stepped out their lanes but he gave his medal to Martina.

    LUTZ LONG

After fouling his first two jumps, Jesse Owens needed to make an adjustment to qualify for the final. His German rival gave him advice and he went on to win gold.

    LAWRENCE LEMIEUX

In Seoul, the sailor rescued Singapore’s Joseph Chan and Siew Shaw after their boat capsized during the race after harsh winds.
