  • Dazzling: Elway.

The most iconic moment of John Elway’s spectacular career came on this day in 1987 when the Denver Broncos quarterback marched his offence down the field in what was labelled ‘The Drive’.

Trailing 20-13 in the AFC Championship Game against the Cleveland Browns, the Broncos received the ball back at their own 2-yard line.

From there, Elway methodically moved the first down chains before reaching Cleveland’s 5-yard line with 39 seconds left.

Elway then connected with Mark Jackson on a touchdown pass and the converted extra point tied the contest.

Denver would go on to win the game 23-20 in overtime on a field goal, but lost the Super Bowl to the New York Giants.

1959: Pakistan batsman Hanif Mohammad scores a then world record 499, playing for Karachi against Bahawlpur. Facing the last ball of the day, Hanif went for a quick single to reach 500 but was run out.

1960: Lamar Clark sets a boxing record by scoring his 44th consecutive knockout victory; a record which still stands today.

1997: Martina Hingis defeats Jennifer Capriati 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 in the final of the Sydney International.

2008: Nicolas Anelka signs for Chelsea for a fee of £15million.
