  • Federer's 2012 Wimbledon success is his last major win.

Federer recorded a record-equalling seventh SW19 singles crown with a 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 success over the Briton on Centre Court, although Murray went on to win their Olympics final at the same venue weeks later.

The legendary Swiss star’s Wimbledon win was his 17th major triumph in total – a record which still stands.

Here’s what other memorable sporting events happened on this day:

1961: Angela Mortimer beat Christine Truman in the first all-British women’s singles final at Wimbledon since 1914.

1978: Bjorn Borg beat Jimmy Connors 6-2 6-2 6-3 in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon to successfully defend his title.

2014: Germany recorded the largest margin of victory in a FIFA World Cup semi-final with a 7-1 demolition of hosts Brazil.
