The popular Red Bull Air Race World Championship is set to return after a three-year hiatus, with the first round scheduled to be held in Abu Dhabi from February 28-March 1.

The championship, which was discontinued after the 2010 season in order to conduct an in-depth review of safety measures, will see the world’s top 12 pilots fight for honours over eight rounds from February to November this year.

In addition to the World Championship, the 2014 edition sees the introduction of the Challenger Cup, where eight rookie pilots will get a chance to race and an opportunity to step up to the championship in the future.

The UAE round is being held under the sponsorship of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA), and will be held in the skies above the Corniche Breakwater.

The selection of Abu Dhabi as the first stop in the World Tour reinforces the city’s leading position on the world map and continues the success of the previous rounds it has hosted.

Briton Paul Bonhomme added to his 2009 title by winning the 2010 edition of the championship and the double world champion will be looking for a third consecutive win this year.

Bonhomme said: “We’re all going to start afresh now. I’m already thinking about how to advance, how to win or even just do well to start with. I’ve got a lot of experience to fall back on, which I’ll be using going into the next world championship.”

Alberto Chahoud, area communication manager for Red Bull Middle East & Africa, said: “Speed fans can expect a thrilling weekend at the end of the month.

“With a series of upgrades, Red Bull Air Race vows to take racing to higher levels.”

Chahoud thanked the TCA for their contribution and support in hosting the event.
