  • Popular: Over 800 swimmers are set to take part in Wild Wadi’s Swim Around the Burj event.

This Friday, 21 February more than 800 swimmers are expected to take part in one of Dubai’s most scenic swimming events held in aid of humanitarian relief, “Wild Wadi’s Swim around Burj Al Arab”, and there’s still a chance to get involved whether you’re a social paddler or are harbouring a thirst for a little weekend competition.

The event raised Dh220,000 last year with 600 participants, and looks to do better this weekend, with proceeds supporting Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which works in nearly 70 countries and provides medical aid to those in need regardless of their race, religion, or political affiliation.

The UAE’s Red Crescent Society will also benefit from proceeds raised.

Individuals and teams of up to four people will be battling it out round the Burj in the usual 800-metre social dash – a scenic course circling the hotel and offering up rare views of this iconic Dubai landmark.

Those in this Open Social Swim category will receive medals and qualify to enter a raffle draw during the event.

And since every registrant will be fitted with ChampionChips, you can find your overall finishing time online, as well as expect to receive a printable certificate right after the race.

That said, this category also welcomes and encourages noncompetitive and relaxed swimmers looking to just get some fitness in for the morning in a unique way, and enjoy the good weather, after which they can take things on to the beach where there will also be family entertainment and activities accompanying the race.

A new competitive 1600-metre swim category has also been added to cater to the quicker competition.

The one to beat is 2013 winner, UAE national swim team captain and Olympic representative, Obaid Al Jasmi, who plans to defend his title this year.

“Wild Wadi’s Swim around Burj Al Arab event is a fun, communityminded concept which emphasizes health and fitness and is set against one of the city’s most iconic backdrops,” said Chris Perry, general manager of Wild Wadi.

Swimmers from the age of seven to 60+ are eligible to enter the event and will be under the watchful eyes of Wild Wadi’s award-winning lifeguard team.

As for the charity aspect, and Ghada Hatim, Executive Director, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) added: “Medical care and other emergency aid is urgently required in places just a short flight from Dubai, and a growing number of people benefit from the funds raised annually by the Wild Wadi’s Swim around Burj Al Arab event.”

In addition to the logistical and health and safety role played by Wild Wadi, several organisations provide support for the annual fundraiser, including Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts, Speedo and Brocot.
