Great Britain finally tasted tennis success once again on this day in 2012, Andy Murray defeating Novak Djokovic 7-6 (12/10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 in the US Open final to end 76 years of hurt.
The Scot had been tipped as the once-dominant nation’s greatest hope since his emergence during the previous decade.
There had been a number of prior near misses, most notably his 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 loss to the same opponent in the Australia Open decider in the preceding year.
Revenge and a place in the history books then beckoned as the two players squared off in Flushing Meadows. Murray has managed to push on from this success, claiming two Wimbledon crowns and two Olympic golds.
