  • Flashback to those glorious European nights

Manchester United haven’t had any glorious European nights in the last few years having failed to qualify for the Champions League in two of the last three.

However, Old Trafford has seen its fair share of drama in the continental tournament over the years and on this day, 18 years ago, it was treated to a thriller.

United played out an exciting 3-3 draw at home to Spanish giants Barcelona in the group stages on their way to that historic treble.

Other memorable events on this day…

1979: USA win the Ryder Cup 17-11. It was the first time players from continental Europe took part in the tournament.

2000: Sammy Sosa becomes the second MLB player to hit 50 or more home runs in three consecutive years, joining Mark McGwire.

2010: England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff announces his retirement from all cricket after losing a longstanding battle with knee problems.

2013: Croatian tennis star Marin Cilic is banned for nine months after a positive test earlier in the year for a banned stimulant.
