  • Behind the wheel, there’s no denying that Stirling Moss was dominant on the race track.

However, it’s quite hard to believe that from 67 starts, 16 victories and 24 podiums, that the Briton never won the Formula One World Championship during his 14-year racing career.

Celebrating his 87th birthday today, Moss enjoyed an illustrious racing career, despite a slow start, going on to drive 84 different car makes including Mercedes-Benz, Lotus and Cooper 500.

Moss finished runner-up on four occasions and third three times in the F1 between 1955 and 1961, using every ounce of skill and experience.

Outside F1, he continued to excel in various motorsports with the Le Mans 24-Hour crown just about the only major event to elude him. He was then knighted in 2000 following his services to motor racing.

1960: Damon Hill, ex-racing driver and Formula One world champion in 1996 (56).

1971: Mike Catt, former England rugby captain, now part of Italy’s coaching set-up (45).

1985: Tomas Berdych, tennis player and runner-up in the 2010 Wimbledon championship (31).

1991: Ryo Ishikawa, Japanese golfer and winner of 15 professional titles (25).
