  • (Clockwise): Roman Abramovich, Eric Hosmer and Wayne Rooney.

He may be struggling for club and country right now but there is no doubting the career achievements of ‘Wazza’.

The Englishman turns 31 today, but it feels like just yesterday when he made his professional debut with Everton at the age of 16 in 2002. His stunning goal that season against Arsenal put him on the map and it wasn’t long before Manchester United came calling.

Rooney has thrived at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League five times, the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, two League Cups twice and one the FA Cup. Despite his current lack of form, the striker is expected to break Bobby Charlton’s club goals record of 249, being only three behind.

Last year Rooney surpassed Charlton’s England record of 50 goals while his 118 caps is second only to goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

More sport star birthdays on this day:

1926: Y.A. Tittle, former NFL quarterback who is tied for the record with seven touchdown passes in a game (90).

1966: Roman Abramovich, Russian businessman and owner of Premier League club Chelsea (50).

1986: John Ruddy, English footballer for Championship club Norwich who has earned one England cap (30).

1989: Eric Hosmer, American baseball player for the Kansas City Royals and a 2016 All-Star (27).
