  • The final of the 1999 rugby World Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff saw Australia take on a rampant France.

The French made it to the final after crushing tournament favourites New Zealand in the semi-finals and must have fancied their chances in the title clash. But in the final, held on this day in 1999, they ran into a resolute Wallabies defence.

Full-back Matt Burke received a bunch of kickable opportunities as he ensured a 12-6 lead at half time.

Australia continued their dominance in the second half and won the game 35-12 to lift their second World Cup, having won the 1991 edition in England.

More memorable events on this day:

1993: Evander Holyfield beats Riddick Bowe in 12 rounds for the heavyweight boxing title at the Caesars Palace in Nevada.

2006: Paul Azinger is named United States Ryder Cup captain for the 2008 event at Valhalla.

2007: Yossi Benayoun scores a hat-trick as Liverpool thump Turkish side Besiktas 8-0 at Anfield in the Champions League.
